Featured Wine of the Week: Sasyr, A Sangiovese & Syrah Blend by Rocca delle Macie

sasyr rocca delle macie sasyr toscane italy 300x250 Featured Wine of the Week: Sasyr, A Sangiovese & Syrah Blend by Rocca delle MacieToscana Indicazione Geografica Tipica 2007

By Matt Goldstein & Carolynn Chapman

Our featured wine of the week is an easy drinking light red blended with 60% Sangiovese and 40% Syrah.  Sasyr, by Rocca delle Macie wineries, is made with grapes from the Maremma vineyards in which the controlled fermentation techniques considerably contribute to the color and aroma.  About 15% of the Sangiovese grapes are aged in small French Oak barrels for about six months.

The Sasyr color is a deep ruby red, the scent is a perfectly light red and a little tart.  The flavor is slightly dry and smooth with notes of tangy fruit, and light blackberry.  The sweet notes dry on the finish but this blends character is smooth and easy drinking.  Sasyr scored an 87 from Wine Spectator, 87 points from I Vini di Veronelli, and an 89 from Annuario dei Migliori Vini Italiani di Luca Maroni.  Rocca delle Macie recommends this wine to be paired with meats, cheeses, Beef fillet with pink and green pepper, Pasta with cherry tomatoes, tuna and feta cheese.

At about $12, Sasyr is an excellent buy.

I had a bottle 07 this past week and LOVED it. I have had my fair share oh reds, but nothing like this……..very smooth! Can’t wait to buy a few more bottles. By far my favorite re so far.

I think MJ may overstate the case, but tend to agree that this wine is not all that great. The Syrah overwhelms the charm of the Sangiovese, and the wine ends up with a little too much berry and murky flavors, though the tannins are pleasant.

I’m assuming a full sangiovese would be much more expensive no?

I’m a huge wine connoisseur and vinophile. I had a friend give me this as a little gift (so I had no idea what price point I was dealing with). I absolutely loved it. The tannins are so rich and thick that it’s almost “chewy” … it’s very DRY … but I enjoyed it very much. It was good ’til the last damn drop. When I saw how inexpensive it was, I was honestly astonished.

We would definitely drink it again and again. A great wine for the price.

I think MJ needs to take a basic course in wine tasting. This is an excellent wine – but then again, wine is like art. I will continue to buy this exceptional wine – just bought another case.

Swill. We have been to Rocca delle Macie, purchased their product on site and have pics to go with it…Sasyr is swill. Their relationship with the wine is to bottle the juice (that probably arrives by the tanker load) for a grower without a bottle plant. The write up on the back of the bottle is “over the top” – This wine makes Yellow Tail taste like WS Wine of the Year and you find the wine at a liquor store in Duendin FL for $8.99. Have a great day.

WOW! That’s just insane. We drank this wine with Sommeliers and they enjoyed it. Sasyr also scored 87 points from Wine Spectator, that’s not peanuts. This is a complete overreaction.

Also, the descriptions on most wine bottles are over the top. To point that out as a flaw is just kind of silly.
