Zyr Russian Vodka: A Classic Premium Vodka & Martini

zyr russian vodka logo Zyr Russian Vodka: A Classic Premium Vodka & MartiniA Classic Martini Vodka, Double Gold Medalist, Scored 100 Points from Wine Enthusiast

By Matt Goldstein

Five times distilled, Zyr Russian Vodka makes its way onto the premium vodka scene as a classic martini vodka.   There’s a reason that Zyr Russian Vodka had a perfect 100 point score from Wine Enthusiast.  Made with Russian winter wheat and rye, the five times distilled vodka also goes through 9 filtrations, in which 5 of the filtrations are done through birch tree charcoal granules.  The formula for Zyr professes to be based on the work of the legendary Russian Scientist, Dmitry Mendeleev, creator of the Periodic Table of Elements.  It is possible however that Zyr might be more genius than the actual Periodic Table itself.   When we say it’s a classic, we mean it.

Zyr Vodka Review, Taste and Flavor:

The Zyr Vodka is remarkably smooth but has a solid bite and perfect structure for a vodka.  Zyr has a complex flavor with a thick aftertaste.  Slightly sweet but very clean in taste, thorough in vodka flavor, the Zyr vodka martini is one of the best vodka martinis we’ve ever had period.   Zyr Russian Vodka can compete with any Vodka on the market today.  Fact!  There is a new premium vodka on the shelves.  We highly recommend this Zyr vodka.

The 42 Below Vodka Martini

42below vodka pic 1111 300x231 The 42 Below Vodka MartiniStraight Out of New Zealand: The Worlds Most Award Winning Vodka

Named after the geographical location of New Zealand, the 42nd parallel; 42 Below Vodka claims that their native New Zealand water is the secret behind the award winning flavor.  Locals call New Zealand the Aotearoa, Land of the Long White Cloud.  Over the last four years, 42 Below Vodka and its flavored vodkas won 19 gold medals in international spirit competitions.  That’s not peanuts.

.

The 42 Below Vodka Flavor, Taste & Review

42 Below is a solid martini vodka.  This New Zealand native vodka is smooth with just enough bite.  42 Below has a mellow vanilla flavor and a dry mouth feel with a hint of salt that compliments the martini pretty well. For those looking for a smooth vodka at about $20, 42 Below is a pretty good buy.  19 Gold medals though?  Eh…

My Dad and Stepmom Janice are in New Zealand on vacation right now as I write this and I know one of them is sipping a martini.  Cheers!

Stolichnaya Vodka, Absolut Vodka & Skyy Vodka Trials!

Stoli stolichnaya vodka poster Stolichnaya Vodka, Absolut Vodka & Skyy Vodka Trials! Vodka Heavyweights Go Head to Head

By Matt Goldstein

In part one of the Whiskeygoldmine Vodka Trials, we took three staples of the American vodka consumer, Stoli, Absolut and Skyy.  Like most vodkas consumed in America, these staples are made from grain.   Stoli is distilled in Russia, Absolut in Sweden, and Skyy in the United States.

The Stoli Vodka Martini

In 1972 at the height of the Cold War, the Unites States & Russia reached a trade deal for Pepsi Cola and Stolichnaya Vodka.  We won’t say which, but one of those countries definitely got the short end of the stick.  In 1985 when Gorbachev instituted Perestroika, Stolichnaya became open to the West.  Made from wheat, rye and glacier water, Stoli is considered to be the classic Russian vodka.   In our first Whiskeygoldmine vodka taste test, Stolichnaya crushed the competition.  The Stolichnaya Vodka martini has a great bite with a thin and beautiful vodka flavor.  The Stoli is sweet, dry and very complex.   There is an overall excellence about this vodka and it separated itself from the pack.  Stoli beat out Absolut and Skyy vodkas with ease.

.

absolut vodka pic1 140x300 Stolichnaya Vodka, Absolut Vodka & Skyy Vodka Trials! The Absolut Vodka Martini

Created over 130 years ago, every drop of Absolut comes from a small village in Ahus, Southern Sweden.   Absolut appeared in America in 1979 and by 2007, Absolut was the fourth largest selling liquor brand in the world behind Smirnoff, Bacardi and Johnnie Walker.  The Absolut martini has a solid bite, bitter aftertaste and good finish.  With a thick mouth feel and a taste of sweet syrup and vanilla, the dry and pleasantly smooth aftertaste makes for a solid vodka and solid martini.  Absolut Vodka effortlessly beat out Skyy Vodka in our first vodka taste test.

.

Skyy Vodka Martini

Founded in 1992, Skyy Vodka is created with quadruple distillation, triple fermentation and reverse osmosis, and independent tests claim that Skyy has fewer impurities than any other vodka.  Perhaps, the lack of impurities adds to the lack of character.  Skyy has a thin vodka flavor, yet tangy with a good bite.  We love bite in a vodka but Skyy seriously lacks of flavor and personality.  Although Skyy is less expensive than Stoli and Absolut, there are many vodkas at this price range that are much better than Skyy such as Svedka, Prairie, Danzka and Luksosawa.

Vox vodka1 300x291 VOX Vodka: The Best Martini Vodka in the World! A Premium Vodka without the Premium Price…

By Matt Goldstein

Imported from the Netherlands where vodka has been made for over four hundred years, VOX is made from 100% wheat grains and distilled 5 times.  VOX Vodka is a double Gold Medalist at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and made using de-mineralized water created through reverse osmosis to remove all traces of color and odor.  Reverse osmosis?  Really?  That is pretty freaking crazy but hey, the result is a flat out masterpiece.  VOX Vodka is the single best martini vodka we’ve ever had.  We always drink martinis with the in and out style so we can taste more of the vodka, not just a lot of vermouth.  VOX is a mouthwatering martini vodka with an all around perfect vodka flavor; a thick mellow taste with a complex finish, good warmth and flawless bite.  Very smooth with faint hints of sweet citrus, VOX is one of the best martini vodkas available period.  For just about $22, this might be the best bang for your buck.  VOX is a premium vodka without the premium price.

The Ciroc Ultra Premium Vodka Martini

Ciroc snap frost Vodka distilled from grapes 1 The Ciroc Ultra Premium Vodka MartiniPhenomenally Smooth, Five Times Distilled from French Gaillac Grapes

By Matt Goldstein

Ciroc Snap Frost vodka is a very rare style of vodka.  More than 98% percent of all vodkas are distilled from grains, while the others are distilled from potatoes.  Ciroc however, is distilled from grapes.  This extremely rare style is actually exceptionally good.  Ciroc snap frost grapes are grown at the Mauzac Blanc vineyard next to the medieval Cordes-sur-Ciel commune in the Gaillac region of France.  The snap frost grapes are distilled four times and then blended with Ugni Blanc grapes from Cognac.  The Blend is then distilled for a 5th time.  Normally, grains need heat to release their sugars, but grapes can be distilled through a cold fermentation and cold maceration process.  This process most likely contributes to the very unique flavor of Ciroc.  We guarantee that you’ve never tasted vodka quite like this.

Ciroc snap frost Vodka distilled from grapes 300x199 The Ciroc Ultra Premium Vodka Martini

The Flavor

The Ciroc Ultra Premium Snap Frost Vodka is phenomenally smooth with notes of fruit and a sweet, salty finish.  There is a definitive citrus flavor that is rare in straight, non flavored vodka.  The flavor is exceptional with a slight hint of sour.  Normally, we prefer more bite in a vodka but this flavor is so unique that the recipe shouldn’t be changed.  Ciroc is solid for a martini vodka but it’s perfect for sipping neat or on the rocks.  The citrus and fruit flavor and lemon mouth feel, with a smoothness often unmatched, make Ciroc Ultra Premium Vodka one of the best available.  After our 2nd in and out martini, we couldn’t help ourselves and just began sipping it straight.

The Ketel One Vodka Martini

kettle one vodka 191x300 The Ketel One Vodka Martini By Matt Goldstein

The In and Out Style with 3 Olives

We made the Ketel One Vodka martini with 3 olives on a skewer and the in and out style so we could let the vodka make the statement.  (The in and out style is made with a very minimal amount of vermouth.)  The first thing we notice about the Ketel One martini is that it has great bite.  We love that!  Good vodka shouldn’t be too smooth; vodka should have some type of kick and the Ketel One is very balanced.  There’s texture, structure and flavor.  The thing that stands out the most about the Ketel One is that it complements the olives perfectly.  The Ketel One has a well-built vodka flavor with a hint of vanilla and salt.  Founded in 1691, Ketel One Vodka is hand crafted in small batches at the Nolet Distillery on Holland.  Through traditional pot stills, filtered by charcoal, the Ketel One premium vodka is an exceptional choice for a martini.

American Vodka Review: Koenig Potato Vodka Martini & The 360 Eco Friendly Vodka Martini

360vodka 236x300 American Vodka Review: Koenig Potato Vodka Martini & The 360 Eco Friendly Vodka MartiniThe In & Out Style…

By Matt Goldstein

The 360 Eco Friendly Vodka

is a quadruple distilled, five times filtered double gold winning vodka priced at around $20.00.    Eco Friendly vodka is an excellent martini vodka.  Its’ very smooth but has good bite.  360 is dry and compliments the fresh vermouth.  There is a thick, full, long lasting aftertaste for a vodka with notes of wheat and cream.  From their on site recycling efforts, 360 Vodka Eco Friendly Vodka claims to have saved 8442 fully grown trees, 3,476,000 gallons of water, 4,500 barrels of oil, 2,000,000 kilowatts of electricity, 30,000 pounds of air pollution and 1,700 cubic yards of landfill space.  Pretty impressive actually…

Koenig Potato Vodka

is a small batch Idaho potato vodka made with pure Rocky Mountain water made in double copper pot stills.  You can really taste the vermouth in this potato vodka.  Koenig vodka is thick with a full body.  Its’ also smooth with a little bite and has a thick mellow aftertaste.  For about $20.00, we prefer Koenig over the much more pricey potato vodka, Ultimat, about $50.00.
