The Whiskey Goldmine One Year In: Random Thoughts from Our First Anniversary

Logo WG 1500 white 300x293 The Whiskey Goldmine One Year In: Random Thoughts from Our First AnniversaryThe Whiskey Goldmine: Like Catching Lighting in a Haystack

By Matt Goldstein

From whiskey to vodka, cuisine and history, Boardwalk Empire, top 10 lists and pop culture, the Whiskey Goldmine has covered a lot of subjects over the past year.  Craft beer, wine and bubbly, serial killers, dictators, cigars, movies and music, we have created a web site with no boundaries, no rules.  The only thing that we really try to do is bring our readers new information that they won’t find anywhere else.  We want to bring our readers original content, make them think, laugh and enjoy a drink with friends.  After all, what’s better than enjoying a drink with friends?

.

The Whiskey Goldmine Logo

As you can see, our logo is a glass of whiskey with ice in it.  Awesome right?  Well, does the Pope shit in the woods?

The funny thing is that we never put our whiskey on ice.  Never!  Always drink whiskey neat.  First, the ice waters down the whiskey which ruins the flavor.  A middle shelf single malt is aged for 12 years in order to get a specific flavor, why change or ruin that perfectly painstakingly unique flavor?  A drop or two of water to open up the single malt is all that’s needed.  Second, cold temperature also masks the true flavor of a whiskey, be it bourbon, rye, Scotch whiskey, Irish whiskey, whatever.  Just get rid of the ice and man up.

.

bushmills 21 yo single malt 111111 300x300 The Whiskey Goldmine One Year In: Random Thoughts from Our First AnniversarySmooth is Not Always Better

After trying every whiskey, vodka, tequila, cognac and spirit we could get our hands on, it’s blatantly obvious that smooth is not always better.  In fact, the smoother the whiskey or vodka, the less good it is.  Many flavors of the spirit are in the finish and the bite, especially with vodka.  Since vodka is so thin, most of the flavor is in the finish.  The smoother the vodka, the less character there is.

.

Our Top 10 Lists are Scientific Fact!

Listen, don’t try to argue with our top 10 lists.  They’re amazing, correct and scientific.  Shut your mouth.

Founders Imperial Stout 300x218 The Whiskey Goldmine One Year In: Random Thoughts from Our First AnniversaryThe Original Mission of Whiskey Goldmine

The idea behind the website was to promote American spirits, wines and craft beers.  When the economy tanked, I started to feel guilty that I had never bought an American car so I thought, what better way to promote America than our craft beer, wines, whiskeys and vodka’s.  The more and more we began to actually create the web site the more I thought that American products would be too narrow of a subject matter.  So I did what any logical person would do, I just bought a Cadillac.  Problem solved.  Now we can discuss German Beers, Scotch whiskey, Irish whiskey, Russian Vodkas and Sake.

.

egg pizza 207x300 The Whiskey Goldmine One Year In: Random Thoughts from Our First AnniversaryNot an Expert…

When I was recently speaking to a friend/family member in some random setting that involved a lot of alcohol, I stated that “I had no idea what I was doing.”  This random unnamed person told me to always act like I know what I’m doing, no matter what.  This was bad advice.  Sometimes the beauty in the truth is the evident flaws in our selves.  Although I am a badass at making drinks, I don’t always know what I’m doing.  I’m not actually an expert in whiskey.  Even though I started a web site called Whiskey Goldmine, it’s not even actually about whiskey.  I’m not an expert in any of these subjects, but I’m going to bring the experts to you.  From chefs to sommeliers, brewers, historians, master distillers and grill masters, the Whiskey Goldmine does its best to bring you information that will create connoisseurs one click at a time.

.

Craft Beer Makes You Fat!

Sorry beer geeks, but the truth is the truth, craft beer makes you fat.  I love all crafts from IPA’s to barleywines, dopplebock’s, porters and stoudts, but since starting this web site I blew up like a fattie from tasting all of the craft beer I could get my hands on.  Recently, I’ve found myself sucking down Miller Lite’s, Amstell Lights and Yuengling Lights.  Sacrilege I know, but it’s not your beer gut you need to worry about.  Plus, I’m not giving up potato chips.

.

carlos the jackal movie ilich ramirez sanchez terrorist 212x300 The Whiskey Goldmine One Year In: Random Thoughts from Our First AnniversaryOur Most Popular Articles

One would be surprised at our most popular articles because their certainly not about whiskey.  Well, one Jack Daniels article is very popular but that’s more because of the pictures than anything.  Our most popular articles are about Boardwalk Empire and prohibition history, gangster timelines, crazy drinking stories about Henry the 8th, Napoleon, Stalin, serial killers and Huey P. Newton.  Why you ask?  Well, more people Google historical figures than vodkas.  Trust us!  There is no doubt about it.  We’re going to bring our viewers more historical articles but it takes time to create.  Tasting notes on beer and whiskey is easy work.  “This tastes is good, this is bad,” blah blah blah.  Nothing original or impessive there eh?  Actually, both the drinking studies and the historical studies took me all my life to get here and I still have no idea what I’m doing.

.

Part 2 of Random Thoughts coming soon, for now I’d like to think my team.

Special thanks to all of those who helped start and contribute to Whiskey Goldmine.  Webmasters Doug Walters and Carolynn Chapman, Senior Editor Tim Rodgers, Senior Foodie Pat Smith, Sommelier Tom Pittakas, Craft Beer specialist Jeremy Thomson, Chef Joe Bombartito, Grill Master Larry Kay, Cigar Afficianado Haroon Mhitar, Kevin Hussey, Eric Duncan, Paul Reiter and my dad, Howard Goldstein.  And a special thanks to all of the distilleries who sent me bottles of liquor.  Keep it coming…  We’re just getting started so here’s to another year.

The Adam Carolla Mangria Cocktail

adam carollas mangira cocktail recipe The Adam Carolla Mangria CocktailSangria for a Man!  Just Add Vodka…

By Tim Rodgers

Whiskey Goldmine is a gentlemens endeavor.  Fine spirits, craft beer, fine cigar’s, & fine dining etc, but somewhere in the word “gentlemen” is “man.”  We can’t help sometimes that we human beings are merely animals and sometimes the primitive instincts take over.  Although our wives and mothers would hate to admit it, men are men. Hence, a concoction like “Mangria” is destined to be born.

Drunk and out of his favorite red wine, comedy mogul Adam Carolla wasn’t ready to call it a night of sustaining a buzz.  Rather than totally shift gears on the type of alcohol to be consumed, Adam prolonged his favorite red wine made by Sledge Hammer and “extended” his glass by pouring a healthy amount of vodka into it.  At that moment, “Mangria” was born.

It eventually evolved into the recipe below, a simple, easy to make version of Sangria (see Whiskey Goldmine’s Sangria recipe.)  It’s simple, easy to make, tastes good, and most importantly, it gets the job done which is the modus operendi of “man” kind alike.

Tune into Guinness World of Records breaking “Adam Carolla Show” pod cast.

Adam Carolla’s Mangria Recipe

3 Cups of SledgeHammer(R) Red Wine

1 Cup Vodka

1 Cup Orange Juice

Lemon Wedge and Sugar to your Liking

Enjoy and Know you SH!

The Stoli Doli Beach Cocktail

stoli doli beach cocktail recipe 240x300 The Stoli Doli Beach CocktailA Stoli Doli Mash Up Recipe!

By Howard & Matt Goldstein

Most Stoli Doli’s are pineapple infused vodka where the pineapple fruit sits in the vodka for weeks, and then the vodka is poured on the rocks.  It’s very good.  We’re actually indebted with gratitude to the Capital Grille for inventing such a work of genius.  However, this takes weeks to make and most of us don’t have that much time to make a cocktail.  Also, it’s very strong for the average drinker.  Although there is a strong pineapple flavor, the Stoli Doli is basically just straight vodka.  Being is that we are chilling at the beach right now in Margate City NJ, Howard (my dad), wanted to sip on something sweet and easy drinking.  We give you the Stoli Doli Beach Cocktail.  It’s sweet, it’s tangy, it’s refreshing; like summertime in a glass.

.

Ingredients:

2 parts Stoli vodka

2 parts pineapple juice

1 part Triple Sec

Pour the contents into an ice filled cocktail shaker, shake for 10 seconds and pour over ice and enjoy.  For a good time, just repeat 3-4 times for you and yours.  Margate City NJ — where the Jews rock out yo!

Gangsters, gambling, alcohol and women; what could be better than that?  When HBO set their new gangster series on the back drop of prohibition and placed it against the historical setting of Atlantic City in the 1920’s, they just so happened to create the best show on television.  From Al Capone, to Lucky Luciano, Arnold Rothstein and Nucky Thompson (A.K.A. Jinro Soju: The World’s Best Selling Spirit!

jinro soju poster korea 218x300 Jinro Soju: The World’s Best Selling Spirit!Jinro Chamisul Soju: A Sweet and Smooth Clear Spirit Since 1925

By Matt Goldstein & Joon Lee

South Korea is the #2 country in alcohol consumption per capita in the world!  South Koreans love to drink and their main drink is Soju, specifically Jinro Soju.  With almost 12 billion bottles consumed annually, Soju is Korea’s main alcoholic beverage.  Mainly distilled from rice, Soju can also be made with wheat, potato barley and tapioca.  Comparable to vodka with much less alcohol, Soju is a clear liquor but sweet and drinkable without much burn.

Launched in 1924, Jinro Soju is now the worlds #1 selling spirit, outselling other leading brands like Stolichnaya, Bacardi and Johnny Walker.  Jinro is not only #1 in the South Korean market, but has Jinro has changed the face of Asian drinking culture.

.

jinro pic 270x300 Jinro Soju: The World’s Best Selling Spirit!Made from 60% grain, 20% sweet potato, 20% tapioca, (50% rice and 50% barley), Chamisul Soju by Jinro has a thin crisp vodka scent and a taste of a sweet watered down vodka.  With an all around sweet sugar flavor, Jinro is very smooth with no bite.  Jinro Soju is very drinkable with a slight burn and warmth.  That’s the reason it sells so much.  Jinro is a sweet and smooth watered down vodka that is very drinkable for the average drinkable.  Lacking any serious bite, this spirit has mass appeal.  Also, many in South Korea and throughout the world mix Soju into their beer to give the Asian style light lager/pilsner a bit of a kick.

.

How Jinro Soju is Made:

Highest Quality Ingredients
Over the past 80 years, Jinro has developed and maintained relationships with Korea’s finest producers of Barley and Spring water(natural resources), ensuring a product of unparalleled quality and taste.Using the Gift of Nature
Jinro soju is natural bamboo charcoal Alkali Soju that is made from 3 year old bamboo of Mt. Jiri and Southern Coast of Korea. This bamboo is made into charcoal by continuous roasting at 1000C for 12 hours and natural cooling for another 12 hours. This charcoal is used to purify both alcohol and water which are the fundamental element of Soju. The alcohol and water is purified through the bamboo charcoal 4 times eliminating all the harmful element of alcohol and impurities while adding the rich essential mineral components such as Kalium. Jinro soju is the result of incorporating nature’s gift with Jinro’s undying devotion to produce high quality Soju.
Exclusive Cutting-Edge Technology
BCA (Bamboo Charcoal Agitation) method uses parasitic action, which is a process of generating water swirl under appropriate temperature and specific hydraulic pressure, thereby widening the contact surface between water and natural bamboo charcoal. This process enables efficient extraction of essential minerals such as Kalium Ion that is abundant within the natural bamboo charcoal.Marrying Method
Marrying method is an adaptation process used to manufacture high quality whisky. It is a method of applying continuous micro-action to all components of Soju that has gone through the BCA and natural bamboo charcoal purification process. This method creates much more stabilized and homogenized molecular structure of Soju components resulting in pure and clean flavor without any undesired after-taste.

The Top 5 Tomato Pies in Philly: Baker St vs. Corropolese

baker st bread company store front pic 300x200 The Top 5 Tomato Pies in Philly: Baker St vs. Corropolese Philadelphia: Maybe the Best Tomato Pie City in the Country

By Matt Goldstein

For those not familiar with the tomato pie, it’s a classic Philadelphia delicacy and usually served square, cold and with no cheese.  When done correctly, it’s one of the best pizzas you can have.  With Baker St., Corropolese and Sarcone’s, one would be hard pressed to find a better city for tomato pie.  Check out our Top 5 Tomato Pies in Philly and let us know how it stacks up to the best.

baker st bread company spinach ricotta pizza 300x225 The Top 5 Tomato Pies in Philly: Baker St vs. Corropolese 1. Baker St. Bread Company

The Baker St. tomato sauce is made with oregano, shredded parmesan, fresh roasted garlic, a little sugar to kill the bitterness & acidity, with a light Focaccia dough crust, airy but crisp on the edges.  Made with all natural ingredients, the sauce is not too much but just enough; it’s perfectly balanced.  Many people in the Philly area rave about Corropolese Bakery being the best, but in all honesty it’s not even close.  Baker St. crushes!  Baker St also has an amazing spinach & ricotta pie which is just as good as the tomato pie.  Baker St. Bread Company is located on Germantown Ave. in Chestnut Hill Philadelphia.

Sarcone’s is a san marzano tomato pie with chunks of plum tomato marinated in garlic, olive oil and other spices.  On top of a thick crusted Sicilian crust is hands down one of the best we’ve ever had.  It’s a close 2nd to Baker St..  Not only does Sarcone’s have one of the best tomato pies in the city but Sarcone’s has the best Italian hoagies.  Yup, I said it; the best Italian hoagies in the city no question about it.  They don’t use slices of cheese; they use big fat chunks of cheese.  It’s absolutely ridiculous!  Sarcone’s is also where many sanwhich shops by their bread because it’s widely regarded to have the best rolls in the city.  Sarcone’s is located at 758 S 9th St in Philadelphia.

.

a taste of italy joe bombartito 300x225 The Top 5 Tomato Pies in Philly: Baker St vs. Corropolese 3.  A Taste of Italy

Not only does a Taste of Italy have excellent tomato pie but their hoagies and sandwiches also rival any spot in the Philadelphia area, even Sarcone’s.  The whole menu at A Taste of Italy is filled authentic gourmet Italian cuisine and the market is packed with gourmet Italian imported oils and pastas.  We recommend A Taste of Italy for their pizzas, sandwiches, platters, catering and just about everything.  You might want to pre-order the tomato pies with as much notice as possible.  A Taste of Italy is located at 901 Bethlehem Pike in Springhouse PA.

.

4.  Corropolese Deli

With the biggest and best reputation for tomato pie in the Philadelphia area, the people must know what they’re talking about.  The Corropolese Deli serves up a sheet of tomato pie with 30 slices that can feed a whole party for $13.  It’s a great sweet pie!  Corropolese also has excellent pepperoni bread, spinach bread and roast beef.  Located at 2014 Old Arch Rd in Norristown, PA.

.

5.  Marchiano’s Bakery LLC

Voted the best of Philly in 2006 and for good reason, the Marchiano’s Bakery makes an outstanding tomato pie.  Marchiano’s also makes great stuffed bread such as the pepper & egg bread, pepperoni bread and meatball bread.  Marchiano’s is located at 4653 Umbria Street in Manayunk Philadelphia.
