Atlantic City Police: This is Not Our Jurisdiction
One poker player was hospitalized with broken teeth and possible facial fractures in a Caesars Casino mugging and assault. Late last night in the bathroom just outside the poker room, a regular poker player was assaulted in an attempted robbery. The victim, George Chu, a 57 year old Asian American and recovering cancer patient was reportedly struck in the face 10 to 15 times and suffered broken bottom teeth, multiple cuts on the eye, heavy bruising and possible facial fractures. Chu barely escaped the bathroom and stumbled towards the poker area covered in blood screaming “help me, help me.” Three security officers from Caesars simply just stood and watched as their patron was in dire straights and the attacker attempted to get away. Witnesses claim another poker player jumped over the railing out of the poker room and attempted to stop the assailant. This unnamed poker player was also reportedly punched several times as the assailant escaped. At this point a half dozen poker players began to chase the suspect out into the street. Again, the Caesars security guards just stood and watched. The suspect, described as a 30 year old African American male, escaped. The crazy thing is that the suspect was reportedly playing poker at the 1-2 tables earlier that evening.
When the Atlantic City police arrived, one of the officers claimed, “This is not our jurisdiction.” Apparently, the State Police are in control because of the on site gaming. Well, as long as the patrons are safe right? Another Caesars security officer also claimed that they were not permitted to chase someone past the casino doors. PLEASE! What about the valet area and cab stand? The parking lot? Outside standing in front of fucking Caesar himself? I guess if there’s a murder in the self park Coliseum, we’ll have to call the Baltimore homicide squad to investigate. You mean to tell me that casino security can’t follow an attempted assault and robbery suspect out into the street and keep an eye on the person until police arrive? If that suspect had robbed the craps table for $40,000 in chips you can bet your ass that casino security would have followed the suspect on foot to Sea Isle City. There are a lot of new casinos popping up all over the place. Caesars better get their shit together.
As he is portrayed in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, Arnold Rothstein was a refined businessman who made millions in gambling ventures many years before prohibition went into effect. In Boardwalk Empire, Rothstein and his young protégé, Charlie Luciano are seen making a business deal for liquor at the very onset of prohibition. This deal comprised of Atlantic City political and crime figure Nucky Thompson, AKA Nucky Johnson, and Johnny Torrio and Jim Colosimo who were early bosses of Al Capone. Rothstein is refined and reserved while Luciano is hotheaded and arrogant. Rothstein also seems to see the business deal a few steps ahead as he agrees to a deal with Nucky that he knows is not necessarily fair, but then proceeds to steal more than his fare share back from Nucky’s casino, and almost flaunting the fact that he cheated. In episode 2, we see a more violent side of Rothstein. Many moments in Rothstein’s life were of course very similar to the show.
1882, Arnold Rothstein is born on East 47th Street in NYC, to an upper middle class family where his father is a businessman and his older brother becomes a rabbi.
Arnold Rothstein flunks out of school because he spends all his time gambling.
1908, future Rothstein business partner Abe Attell defeats Tommy Sullivan and becomes the undisputed featherweight champion.
1912, by the age of 30, Arnold Rothstein is a millionaire owner of gambling parlors and racetracks.
1914, Rothstein begins laying off the largest bets in the country and becomes one of the most influential and powerful bookmaker in the world.
1919, Arnold Rothstein fixes the World Series with Abe Attell. The Chicago White Sox intentionally lose to the Cincinnati Reds. The incident now known as the Black Sox scandal becomes the most infamous and egregious gambling scandal in history.
1920, Prohibition begins and Rothstein becomes a bootlegging pioneer.
In 1921, eight baseball players are convicted and banned from the sport. Abe Atell is also convicted of trying to fix the Series. Rothstein was acquitted of all charges. Along with Shoeless Joe Jackson, Rothstein maintained his innocence for life.
In the early to mid 1920’s, Rothstein’s influence on prohibition and organized crime are as deep they come. Rothstein plays a pivotal role in the National Crime Syndicate, Murder Inc, the Commission, smuggling booze, drugs, diamonds and mentoring legendary mafia figures such as Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, and Bugsy Segal among others…
1925, The Great Gatsby is published and character Meyer Wolfsheim is based on Arnold Rothstein.
1926, Rothstein wins $500,000 on the first Jack Dempsey-Gene Tunney fight.
1928, Rothstein is murdered after reneging on a $300,000 loss in a poker game. Refusing to pay after accusing the other players of cheating, Rothstein murderers reportedly killed him in order to teach him a lesson. On his deathbed, the Jewish Rothstein stuck to the code of the streets and refused to name his assassins.

Domaine de Canton is an excellent liqueur. The nose is a very strong ginger with a subtle medicinal quality. The flavor is much sweeter and the finish is very smooth. The Cognac quality and is evident with the eaux de vie complimenting the ginger almost perfectly. Domaine de Canton is one of the best liqueurs in the world.
Domaine de Canton is a small batch liqueur made with the finest eaux de vie in France; XO and VSOP Grand Champagne Cognacs only. With ginger root from Indo China, the Canton is then hand made with all natural ingredients; Tahitian vanilla beans, Provencal honey, and Tunisian ginseng. According to their web site, “Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur was inspired by the French tradition in which sweet and fresh elixirs were fortified by fine eaux de vie and Cognac. Named for the ginger estate of Domain de Canton, this aromatic elixir first became popular with the French during colonial Indochina.”
Domaine de Canton can be drunk straight, on the rocks or in a cocktail such as the Whiskey Goldmine original, The General Tso Martini.
One of the first nationally recognized gangsters and the most legendary bootleg booze smuggler in history, Al Capone was extremely wealthy and a brutal murderer. At one point in the 1920’s Capone was allegedly pulling in more than $60 million a year off of booze alone and another $40 million in racketeering, prostitution and gambling. After the rival Bugs Moran gang over stepped their bounds by stealing one too many of Capone’s booze shipments, Capone’s henchman dressed up as police officers and faked a raid on the Moran warehouse. The disguised enforcers lined up 7 members of the Moran gang against the wall and executed them. This incident became known as the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Capone was never convicted of illegal smuggling but couldn’t hide all of his money from the IRS. In HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, Capone is portrayed as a young henchmen who orchestrates a robbery of a shipment of booze owned by Arnold Rothstein.
2. Charles “Lucky” Luciano:
Perhaps the richest gangster in the history of the world, Lucky Luciano and partner Meyer Lansky made more money than any mobsters ever without even accounting for inflation. Most of this money was probably made by heroin long after prohibition had ended. However, Luciano is credited for making the peace with fellow gangsters in an attempt to quell the violence and save money on shipments and political bribes. Associated with the National Crime Syndicate, head of the Commission and the Young Turks, Luciano brought all the heavyweight gangsters together, including Al Capone. Luciano was one of the first Italian gangsters to align himself with Jewish mobsters such as Allan Rothstein, Meyer Lansky and Ben Segal, as well as Italian gangsters Frank Costello, Vito Genovese, Johnny Torrio, Joseph Bonano and Al Capone. These guys were the champions of bootlegging. In Boardwalk Empire, Luciano is portrayed as a hot headed young associate of Rothstein.
3. Meyer Lansky:
Legend has it that it was Lansky’s idea to create the Commission but some say it was Johnny Torrio that convinced Luciano that the Commission was the right thing to do. Yup, it was a Jew’s idea that all of the leaders of the Italian mob sit down and work together for better business and the benefit of everyone. Maybe Henry Ford was right about the International Jewish Conspiracy to control all the money. After all, I still get my Jew check in the mail every week. Again, perhaps the richest gangster in history with his close friend and associate Lucky Luciano, Lansky was instrumental in Luciano’s rise to power and the creation of the Commission. Lansky’s gambling business stretched from New York, to Florida, Cuba and Vegas. In the 30’s and 40’s, Lansky actually worked with the U.S. government in providing security for naval ships in the port and intimidating Nazi sympathizers.
4. Johnny Torrio:
Leader of the Chicago outfit and mentor of Al Capone, Torrio is credited for creating the bootlegging empire that Capone would takeover and expand. Torrio was also heavily influential in creating the Commission with Luciano and Lansky and a close ally of the Genovese family. At the beginning of Prohibition, Torrio’s boss, Jim Colosimo, refused to smuggle booze figuring it would bring too much heat from the Feds. Torrio had Colosimo murdered in his own restaurant, as portrayed on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire at the end of episode 1. This assassination opened the flood gates for Torrio and Capone to become bootlegging legends.
5. Arnold Rothstein:
Allegedly fixing the 1919 World Series by paying Chicago White Sox players to intentionally lose to the Cincinnati Reds, Rothstein was also one of the first gangsters to set up major bootlegging operations during the onset of Prohibition. Rothstein advised many crime families and attempted to take the violence out of the business. Rothstein was also a legendary gambler but was murdered in 1928 after reneging on a $300,000 loss in a poker game. Refusing to pay after accusing the other players of cheating, Rothstein murderers reportedly killed him in order to teach Rothstein a lesson. On his deathbed, the Jewish Rothstein stuck to the code of the streets and refused to name his assassins. In episode 1 of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, Rothstein is portrayed as a gambling cheat and slick deal maker only to have a shipment a booze stolen.
6. Bugs Moran:
Chief rival and arch enemy of Johnny Torrio and Al Capone, the Polish and Irish Moran was never took orders from the Chicago Outfit and Southside Gang. In fact, Moran stole Torrio and Capone’s booze at will. Aligning himself with the Irish bootlegger Dean O’Banion, Moran’s outfit became known as the Northside gang. Throughout the 20’s, the Chicago Outfit and Southside Gang battled the Northside gang in shootouts, kidnappings, murder and torture. After O’Banion’s assassination at the hands of Capone and Torrio, Moran continued to battle Capone for years. The exclamation point on the war was the eventual St. Valentine’s day massacre when seven of Moran’s men were executed. However, Moran never wavered, controlling most of his territory and taking revenge by murdering Capone associates for almost a decade to come.
7. Enoch “Nucky” Johnson:
Originally a sheriff in Atlantic City, Nucky rose to power as one of the leading Republican political figures. Nucky used his political influence to establish Atlantic City as one of the leading ports for bootlegging and allied with Rothstein, Luciano, Torrio, Capone and others. Johnson is actually portrayed as Nucky Thompson as the main character of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and played by Steve Buscemi as a charitable, level headed and charismatic business man in episode 1.
8. Frank Nitti:
Dubbed the “Enforcer,” Nitti was the go to muscle for anyone that didn’t fall in line with Capone’s wishes. Nitti also ran Capone’s smuggling operations and later became the front man of the Chicago Outfit.
9. Bugsy Segal:
An enforcer for Lansky since they were teenagers, Segal became a mob hitman for multiple families during Prohibition. Segal aligned himself with Lansky, Luciano and Frank Costello and established bootlegging operations with close ally Albert Anastasia. Known by many as the father of Las Vegas, Segal was murdered in 1947 after the financing of the Flamingo Hotel seemed to disappear.
As a former battalion commander of the British Army in WWI, as well as a veteran of military action in India, Sudan and South Africa, Winston Churchill is seen by many as the leader in the fight against the Nazi’s in WWII. Churchill was the first to warn the world about Hitler and he was the spiritual glue for the Allies to fight side by side. Winston Churchill might be the most celebrated and respected leader in world history. It’s astonishing that Churchill actually lost his re-election campaign. Yup, the conservative Churchill was only a one term president, losing to the Labor Party Leader Clement Attlee in a landslide after WWII. Maybe it was because Churchill was drunk. Then again, Churchill was completely drunk during WWII and I’m pretty sure he came out the victor in that campaign. Many times, Churchill had a drink in the morning, but Churchill always had drinks for lunch, dinner and well into the evening. This was Churchill’s daily routine. Whiskey, Champagne, scotch, brandy, gin, highballs, and Cointreau were his drinks of choice. Of course, the scotch and brandy always went with a cigar. Drunk or not, Churchill was one of the only world leaders who saw the Nazi war and death machine coming; and it was years before Germany invaded a country.
Boris Yeltsin:
The two term Russian President and the first recognized leader of post Soviet Russia, Boris Yeltsin, was a complete and total drunk. Most people reading this probably remember the guy being drunk in public many times. One night, while on a visit to Washington D.C., Yeltsin was staying across the street from the White House. Completely hammered at about midnight or so, the Secret Service found Yeltsin outside on Pennsylvania Ave. in nothing but his boxer shorts trying to wave down a cab and go get a pizza. Slurring his words with no shirt, no pants, and his belly sticking out, this drunk thought it was a good idea to ride solo to the local Domino’s. Although Russia was in economic crisis throughout his presidency, Yeltsin is credited for disbanding the communist party in the Russian Parliament and standing up against a coup attempt by hard-line radical communists. The image of Yeltsin standing on a tank outside the Russian White House with a crowd of thousands around him is iconic. That was the day that the Soviet Union had ended.
In what can only be described as our favorite medical study of all time, it seems that men who consume up to 4 drinks a day reduce the risk of death by 18%. Women can also consume up to 2 drinks a day for the same effect. This can only mean that if one is not consuming alcohol regularly, that person is simply killing themselves faster. It has already been well documented that the red and white wine have an abundance of heart healthy and cancer fighting antioxidants as well as beer, especially craft beer. Without a doubt, this must have had an impact on the study. However, this study also implies that cocktails our healthy as well. Vodka and gin martini’s, scotch on the rocks, Cognac, Bourbon, rum and tequila all seem to be healthy. Perhaps there are antioxidants in all alcohol, but conceivably there could also be other ingredients in the alcohol or complexes in the fermentation process that are healthy as well. Doctors don’t really know all the answers, but they do know that drinkers have lower rates of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Drinkers also have improved amounts of HDL, aslo known as good cholesterol and better insulin sensitivity which can have a wide range of healthy effects.
The heart healthy benefits of drinking could also be from the blood thinning properties in alcohol, much like aspirin. Just ask yourself, “What would Jesus do?” Source: MSNBC, Time, and Slate.
A Potato Vodka Complimented with Grand Marnier and Domain de Canton
Created by Zach Stamler, written by Matt Goldstein
Inspired by an open bar in Old City Philadelphia’s premiere martini bar, the Continental, a somewhat lit Zach had the itch to start experimenting and created a work of art. This work of genius started with Luksusawa Potato Vodka, Grand Marnier and Canton liqueur’s to compliment. Domaine de Canton is a small batch liqueur made with the finest eaux de vie in France, XO and VSOP Grand Champagne Cognacs only.
Grand Marnier is an orange liqueur made from Cognac and hand picked Caribbean oranges which are slowly aged in French Oak casks.
The Recipe:
1.5 parts Luksusawa Vodka
.5 parts Grand Marnier Liqueur
.5 Parts Domain de Canton liqueur
1 orange slice soaked in bitters
Put the orange peel in the bitters and drop into a chilled martini glass. Add the vodka, Canton and Grand Marnier into the iced filled shaker and shake hard for 8-10 seconds.
Pour the shaker over the orange peel and serve…
The Grand Marnier can be substituted with Cointreau and the Luksusawa can be substituted with a potato vodka such as Glacier, Chopin or Boyd & Blair.
