Philly Restaurant Review Quick Hits: Alma De Cuba, Kraftwork, the Couch Tomato & Isabella

alma de cuba Philly Restaurant Review Quick Hits: Alma De Cuba, Kraftwork, the Couch Tomato & IsabellaIntroducing Our Quick Hits Restaurant Review Series

By Matt Goldstein

The Whiskey Goldmine would like to introduce our Quick Hits restaurant review series where we discuss a few restaurants and highlight some must haves around the city.  We open our series with an old school veteran of Rittenhouse Square, Alma De Cuba, but we also highlight a new kid on the block, Kraftworks, on Girard Ave in Fishtown.

Alma De Cuba:  A Romantic Cocktail Lounge

This Steven Starr restaurant downstairs lounge area is perfect for a date night.  The romantic candle lit setting with relaxing white chairs and couches on a Friday night make a simple romantic statement complimenting the casual light fare on the menu.  From chorizo sliders to Kobe beef tacos and shrimp ceviche, to maybe the best guacamole in the city, the light fare at the Alma De Cuba cocktail lounge makes a perfect date night and brilliant setting to try some Cuban style cocktails.  From sangria’s to mojitos, this oldie but goody is a must for cocktail hour.  Also, make sure you try the chocolate cigar almond cake mousse, trust us.  1623 Walnut St., Philadelphia, PA

.

Isabella conshohocken 300x188 Philly Restaurant Review Quick Hits: Alma De Cuba, Kraftwork, the Couch Tomato & IsabellaIsabella

Perhaps the best new restaurant in Conshohocken, the tapas at Isabella make you want to keep coming back.  While the bar area can get a little tight, the restaurant decor is light, refreshing and slightly romantic.  From the drunken figs, tartufo pizza, and an excellent cheese plate, the ahi tuna, spinach ricotta ravioli, and Spanish style octopus, there is no other restaurant in Conshohocken we’d prefer right now.  382 East Elm St., Conshohocken, PA

.

kraftwork 300x292 Philly Restaurant Review Quick Hits: Alma De Cuba, Kraftwork, the Couch Tomato & IsabellaKraftwork

The new Kraftwork bar on Girard Ave isn’t just a must try for the craft beer.  Kraftwork has one of the best burgers in the city period.  It’s a top 5 Philadelphia burger, no question about it.  Adam Ritter’s critically acclaimed Side Car Bar has stepped it up a notch with the pub food at Kraftwork.  The pretzel bite fondue and the Sicilian arincini rosotto balls are absolutely ridiculous.  You’ll go to Kraftworks for a beer, you’ll comeback for the food.  Kraftwork is also one of the most stylish and original bars you will ever see.  Also, you can get craft beer almost anywhere, but Kraftwork specializes in craft beer flights so you can try samples of 5 beers at a time.  There’s nothing better.  541 East Girard Avenue, Philadelphia, PA

.

The Couch Tomato

OK, so the Couch Tomato forgot our order, forcing us to wait an extra half hour for our take out.  Oh yeah, we got a parking ticket too as we were not expecting to wait at all.  It’s a tough break when your staff forgets the food order of someone planning a restaurant review.  Fear not Couch Tomato, it might have been a tough day for service but you still make the best wraps in the city.  Yup, I said it.  The best wraps in the city!  I challenge anyone to find better wraps in the entire Philadelphia area because it’s not happening.  From the Holy Chipotle Wrap, Paco’s Taco Salad Wrap, Buffalo Chicken Wrap and Oriental Crunch Wrap, the Couch Tomato makes a wrap for you.  102 Rector St., Philadelphia, PA

The March Madness Beer Championship Final Four: Founders Breakfast Stout, Pliny the Elder, Stone IPA and Ayinger Celebrator

chrisitan laettner final four 300x219 The March Madness Beer Championship Final Four: Founders Breakfast Stout, Pliny the Elder, Stone IPA and Ayinger CelebratorElite 8 Results: The Big Dogs in Craft Beer Lay the Smack Down in Multiple Beer Competitions

By Team Goldmine

After four rounds of all out beer competitions, beer trials, and taste testing, the Goldmine Team has selected our Final Four:  Founders Breakfast Stout, Pliny the Elder, Stone IPA and Ayinger Celebrator.  The crazy thing is that we thought two of these beers might actually go down in the first round, but hey, that’s just March Madness.  Over the next few days we’ll feature each of the Final Four Beers and hype up the biggest showdown in beer bracket and beer competition in history.  Yup, I said it.  Do you really think the Washington Post and the Great American Beer Fest are more important than us?  Of course they are, let’s not get crazy now.  Thanks for the compliment though.  Click the link to see the March Madness Beer Championship Bracket.

The Avery Dugana Double IPA, Smuttynose IPA, & Oskar Blues Gubna Imperial IPA

Avery Gubna Double IPA 300x300 The Avery Dugana Double IPA, Smuttynose IPA, & Oskar Blues Gubna Imperial IPABy Matt Goldstein & Pat Smith

During a weekend of absolute debauchery in Atlantic City with all you can eat and drink comps, ringside seats at the fight, hot rocks at the craps table and insidious bar hopping and the March Madness Beer Championship, we unselfishly took the time out to review a few beers.  The Avery Dugna Double IPA and Oskar Blues Gubna Imperial IPA certainly have an interesting take on America’s top craft beer style.

.

The Avery Dugna Double IPA

The Dugna Double IPA is made with Chinook, Centennial and Columbus hops and malted with Two-row barley, dark aromatic and caramel malts.  The Avery philosophy behind creating this beer was “unity of bitterness, hop flavor and aroma.”  Well, that philosophy certainly hit the mark.  This complex and refined double IPA is gold in color and has a strong bitterness character with a solid grapefruit flavor.  Dry and bitter with a good hop flavor with a good bite, the Dugna is a solid all around IPA.  The Avery Dugna Double IPA is a must try!  For food pairing, Avery eating creamy, cheesy dishes such as pasta carbonara, fettucini alfredo or pepperoni pizza.   OG: 1.076  ABV: 8.5%  IBUs: 93

.

oskar blues gubna imperial ipa 300x137 The Avery Dugana Double IPA, Smuttynose IPA, & Oskar Blues Gubna Imperial IPAOskar Blues Gubna Imperial IPA

Made with German Dark Munich Malt, Rye Malt and North American 2-row barley, the Gubna Imperial IPA is an absolute wild taste for an IPA.  Hopped once with Summit Hops, the Gubna is sweet, malty, with notes of honey and a thick mouth feel.  Again, this is a wild and awesome taste for an IPA.  The Gubna is a thick sweet and oily beer.  Oskar Blues does it again and again.  10% ABV, 100 IBUs

.

smuttynose ipa 281x300 The Avery Dugana Double IPA, Smuttynose IPA, & Oskar Blues Gubna Imperial IPASmuttynose Finestkind IPA

The Smuttynose Finestkind IPA won gold medal at the GABF in 2004 for the best American beer.  Craft beer  has changed a lot over the last few years but the Smuttynose IPA is still solid.  Dry hopped and unfiltered, the Smuttynose IPA has a solid grapefruit flavor and is sweet with great bite.  It’s dry and full flavored with a great finish and notes of malts, and bitter hops.  6.5% ABV, 65 IBUs

Cigar City Brewing’s Hunahpulooza

cigar city hunahpu humble 300x188 Cigar City Brewings HunahpuloozaCourtesy of Billy’s Beer Blog

By Bill Zavorskas

It was a spectacular day this past Saturday when the Mr. Beery’s Magic Bus Tour departed to Cigar City Brewing in Tampa for Hunahpu’s Day. Our mission: to drink great beer, enjoy the festivities, and of course to claim our trophy – the 2011 release of Cigar City Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout (Cigar City Brewing; Tampa, FL; Russian Imperial Stout; ABV: 11.5).

Upon arriving, we all took advantage of the festive atmosphere, which included live music and a tasty variety of cuisine, from local area restaurants, to compliment the beer. Creativity was the word of the day for beer, from Cigar City’s own Pilot Series Barleywine to some outstanding home brews like the Pinellas Urban Brewers Guild’s amazing Russian Imperial Stout and Special Hoperations’ superb Smoked Jalapeno Ale. There was an extensive lineup of guest brews on tap as well, including the highly regarded Funky Buddah Maple Bacon Coffee Porter (The Funky Buddah Lounge & Brewery; Boca Raton, FL; Porter; ABV: 6.3), which unfortunately kicked right before we arrived. But in the end, there was only one beer that mattered – Hunahpu.

bill zavorskas billys beer blog 300x253 Cigar City Brewings HunahpuloozaCreated from their Marshall Zhukov’s Imperial Stout, and aged on pasilla and ancho peppers as well as vanilla, cinnamon and cocoa nibs, Hunahpu is definitely something special. This imperial stout pours a jet black color, with big notes of expresso and sweet dark chocolate balanced by roasted malt, vanilla beans, and peppery spices. The flavors tend to be even more accentuated in the 2011 brewing than in 2010, with the vanilla beans and peppery spices really coming through to balance the sweet chocolate notes. I had a chance to speak with head brewer Wayne Wambles, and he had wanted to improve upon last year’s offering. Needless to say he’s succeeded, which is saying something considering that the 2010 Hunahpu is considered to be one of the world’s best beers.

CCB made bottles of Hunahpu available to the first 750 guests, with a four bottle limit per person. I was glad to be a part of this afternoon, and to take home my own supply of this incomparable stout.

Lastly, I’d like to give thanks to Cigar City Brewing for hosting this great event, Mark for arranging the Mr. Beery’s Magic Bus Tour, Sam for being a hip chaperone to our merry band of beer geeks, Gemma for staying behind to secure our purchases of Hunahpu, and my pal Brad, for riding shotgun with me and filming the day’s events for our video blog. Once the mad genius has finished editing, I’ll attach the video feed to this blog. Cheers!

Craig Laban’s Philadelphia Inquirer & Philly.com Review of the Khyber Pass Pub

khyber pass pub1 300x62 Craig Laban’s Philadelphia Inquirer & Philly.com Review of the Khyber Pass Pub“Former gritty rock-and-roll bar’s top-notch craft-beer lineup is joined by a new, inspired Southern menu.”

An Article By Craig Laban, Restaurant Critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Forward by Matt Goldstein

The remaking of the Khyber Pass Pub started with Whiskey Goldmines’ own beeritual advisor, Jeremy Thomson.  Jeremy is now the manager of the Khyber Pass Pub and turned it from the king of Philadelphia’s music and punk rock scene into one of the finest craft beer pubs in the Philadelphia area.  Jeremy took his lifelong passion and craft education and created a beer list from the gods, bottle and draft alike.  Now, the legendary Craig Laban of the Philadelphia Inquirer has reviewed the Khyber Pass Pub for its food and drink alike.  Described as one of the best southern cuisine restaurants and maybe the best New Orleans / Creole style restaurant in Philadelphia in more than a decade, Craig Laban’s review was a pleasure to read.  Congrats to Jeremy, Chef Mark McKinney, and the rest of the crew at the Khyber.

The 2011 March Madness Championship Beer Rankings!

marchmadness logo normal 300x190 The 2011 March Madness Championship Beer Rankings!Welcome to our 2011 March Madness Championship Bracket Style Beer Tournament

By Tim Rodgers and Matt Goldstien

Starting on Thursday March 15th 2011, 64 Men’s College Basketball Teams will be playing for their playoff lives in an all-out single elimination tournament to ultimately crown the College Basketball champion in Houston Texas on April 4th.  Whether you are a proud alumnus of one of the fine schools (GO TEMPLE OWLS!), a degenerate gambler, office bracket pool addict, merely a hoops fan, or all of the above, the tournament is like a nirvana in the dawn of Spring.

Scroll Down for Beer Rankings…

march madness 2008 300x177 The 2011 March Madness Championship Beer Rankings! But why limit our pleasure at mere basketball, when we could take it a step further?  Whiskey Goldmine is conducting an all out single elimination beer tournament of 64 beers from around the world, with varying styles, and crafts to ultimately crown this years’ Beer Champion!

Our esteemed panels of expert craft beer drinkers, sommeliers, bartenders, flunkies and blow-hards have been tirelessly sampling different beers to arrive at the field of 64.  This panel includes Whiskey Goldmine founder and CEO Matt Goldstein, Senior Editor Tim Rodgers, Sommelier Tom Pittakas, Craft Beer adviser and Kyber Pub’s Jeremy Thompson, craft beer enthusiast, world traveler and restaurant blogger from the craft beer mecca of Portland Oregon- Pauly “P” Reiter, The Iron City’s own craft beer specialist and Senior Director Pat Smith, craft beer veteran Don “Da Bomb” Corino, along with the a whole host of experts and beer enthusiasts in the Whiskey Goldmine family.

march madness logo 20111 The 2011 March Madness Championship Beer Rankings! In the spirit of the basketball tournament, the 64 “best” beers don’t always make it.  You have to be atop of your “beer” category (or class if you will) in order to qualify for the field of 64.  Conversely, some inferior styles will also have a shot in the field of 64, just like some inferior college basketball conferences always have one representative.  In classic March Madness basketball, a #12 seed upsetting a #5 seed is part of the excitement and heartbreak that college basketball drama brings to the table every year, in every bracket.  The dream may live on, or come to an abrupt halt.

In just over seven months of going live on the internet, the March Madness Bracket Tournament of Beer Champions is the biggest undertaking that our young web site has ever tried.  After careful deliberations, trials and taste tests, we would like to personally congratulate the following field of 64 finalists.  Stay tuned for our down-loadable bracket so you can keep score at home and follow your favorite beer to the finish line.  There will be excitement, there will be controversy, there will be heartbreak, but there will only be one champion.
