Let us just start this off by making a simple statement: one person drinking five martinis is a serious mistake, let alone 2 people drinking 10 martinis in cahoots. We strongly advise against this many martinis. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s discuss the gold medal winning Platinum Vodka from Buffalo Trace. Seven times distilled and for only $10, this smooth, grainy and flavorful vodka is a flat out stud! Made from corn and limestone water, Buffalo Trace & Sazerac must be applauded for selling this beautiful spirit for merely $10. We sipped Platinum along side of the premium French vodka Quay, which is about $30. Quay was slightly smoother but Quay was also a bit boring, flavorless, and a bit like drinking water. Where’s the party in drinking water? If your preference is flavor depth and a small bite than Platinum Vodka is where it’s at. Don’t believe us? The San Francisco World Spirits Competition awarded Platinum 7X a Gold Medal in its vodka category and The Beverage Testing Institute rated it “Best Buy” and “Highly Recommended.” For the price range, Platinum Vodka comes with Whiskey Goldmine’s highest recommendation and sips a perfect straight martini.
New Orleans, LA. – Platinum 7X has raised the bar on what it means to be an ultra-smooth vodka. Distilled seven times, Platinum 7X Vodka makes a bold impression, delivering purity, smoothness, and an attractive price point. The Sazerac team has crafted something truly exceptional, unveiling a stylish, contemporary new look for this fast-growing brand that clearly reflects the super-premium experience of the spirits inside.
The experts agree: The San Francisco World Spirits Competition awarded Platinum 7X a Gold Medal in its vodka category and The Beverage Testing Institute rated it “Best Buy” and “Highly Recommended.” “The Platinum 7X brand hits on all cylinders – great taste, great packaging, and a great price – providing an overall experience that easily rivals that of more expensive brands,” states Tracey Clapp, brand manager for Platinum 7X Vodka. “As a proven seller, Platinum 7X demonstrates what discerning vodka consumers already know – that a great vodka doesn’t have to come at a super-premium or luxury price.”
The brand will be supported by trade advertising and at retail with branded shippers, case cards and sell sheets. On premise accounts can find a variety of recipes for Platinum 7X cocktails at
“With national sales growing by double digits, Platinum 7X has a sleek, stylish look and a clean, crisp taste that puts the brand in a great position for continued future growth,” adds Clapp. Proudly American-made from high-quality grain, Platinum 7X is a remarkable vodka that delivers a memorable drinking experience every time.

Tweeddale blend was first distilled in 1820 in Coldstream Scotland, just a few minutes from the border of England. Having been shut down during WWII, the Tweeddale Blend was reborn in 2009. The first batch was produced in 2010 and we were lucky enough to get a taste of Batch 2, bottled in June of 2011. Batch two is made up of single grain whisky aged for more than 15 years sherry cask. Seven of the eight single malts are from the same casks as batch 1 but a year older, from 12 years old to 21 years old. A blend of aged single grain whisky and eight individually selected aged single malt whiskies with a high malt content (50% grain, 50% malt), the Tweeddale blend is non chill filtered in keeping with the tradition of the original blend. Bottled at about 46% ABV, the 12 years aged Tweedale Batch 2 is a solid scotch whisky. With a thick gold color, the Tweeddale 12 Year is very smooth with a syrupy, fruity flavor with an oak and wood mouth feel. Sweet, smooth and warm this full bodied and balanced blend with a solid, light and refreshing smokiness. This is a solid scotch whisky and we definitely recommend it.
Tasting Notes from Tweeddale:
Batch Two (First bottled June 2011, available now)
Nose -mellow, sherry, toffee.
Palate -rich, full yet delicately flavoured
Finish -rounded, with hints of spice.
Just as every batch was slightly different when my Great Grandfather produced it over 70 years ago, my 2nd batch of The Tweeddale Blend is 12 year old.
Triple Distilled in Small Batches: L’Chaim to Life!
By Matt Goldstein & Amy K. Haight
When a friend of ours invited us over for a New Years Day feast of the traditional Dutch Pork and Sauerkraut, we thought it would be funny to bring over a kosher vodka from Israel to pair it with and it was a hit. The L’Chaim Kosher Vodka from Israel is a process and recipe is based on a formula handed down through several generations of European and Russian Jews. L’chaim sources its own spring water shunning any filtering and de-mineralization treatments. Many vodka’s go out of their way to brag about their pure water and filtration processes and proclaim how much better it makes the vodka, however, we are not so sure. L’Chaim Vodka is triple distilled in Or Akiva on Israel’s coastal plain. A small batch vodka, L’Chaim is a solid buy for about $22 if you can find it on sale.
L’Chaim Vodka Tasting Notes:
Smooth, spicy and flavorful with a good enough bite and a little complexity. We tried L’Chaim Vodka straight, on the rocks and in an orange martini style cocktail and enjoyed all three. Basically, we just squeezed a couple of very small oranges into the vodka put what was left of the oranges in the very. Very simple to make and very good, not too much sugar or syrups or anything else needed. This is a solid vodka.
From L’Chaim Vodka:
L’CHAIM is a message of unity and inclusiveness, The theme TO LIFE is a compelling concept. L’Chaim brings together all people from everywhere regardless of social, political, cultural, economic or religious backgrounds. Enjoy L’CHAIM branded products and celebrate life. L’CHAIM!
World’s Most Awarded Gin & One of the World’s Best Spirits.
By Matt Goldstein & Amy K. Haight
Distilled in England and blended in Iceland, the Martin Miller’s Gin is a small batch, pot stilled gin, made much like a malt whiskey. Receiving a 93 rating from the Wine Enthusiast, perhaps the genius in this gin is its subtlety. Made with juniper, coriander, angelica, orange peel and lemon peel, the distilled gin is then sent to Iceland to be blended with what is said to be the “purest, softest water on earth.” This soft water helps to have a soft mouth feel where the drinker can focus more on the flavor of the gin. Quite simply, this might be the best gin we’ve ever tasted. Drinking it neat, Martin Miller’s Gin is one of the best spirits in the world. While most gins are harsh and overly piney, the Martin Miller’s Gin is subtle, smooth and only slightly piney. Keep in mind, smooth doesn’t always mean something is better, but in this case it certainly does.
The Martin Miller’s Gin Tasting Note:
The scent is a sharp citrus with subtle pine notes. Smooth with good warmth, a good citrus flavor and more citrus than pine, Martin Miller’s is slightly sweet and slightly thicker than most gins. With a soft and sweet mouth feel, this is an excellent gin and will make anyone a gin fan. Martin Miller’s Small Batch Pot Stilled Gin is not only one of the best gins in the world; it’s simply one of the best spirits in the world period.

The Prince of Whiskies is a Smooth Beautiful Blend
By Matt Goldstein & Amy K. Haight
With more than two centuries’ of history, Chivas Regal 12 year old is an expression of a unique tradition that has continued unbroken since the Chivas Brothers first introduced the world to the rich, smooth Scotch whisky of Chivas Regal. “For more than 500 years, Scotland has been perfecting the art of producing Scotch whisky. Chivas Regal is made from pure, natural, Scottish ingredients. For more than 500 years, Scotland has distilled their original whisky – malt Scotch whisky. Malt Scotch whisky is made from only three natural ingredients – quality malted barley, natural spring water and yeast. A blended Scotch whisky must contain both malt Scotch whisky and grain Scotch whisky. The art of blending is to harmonize the characters and flavours of selected malt and grain Scotch whiskies to produce a blended Scotch whisky of the highest possible quality. This requires the master blender to possess an expert ‘nose’ and many years’ experience of Scotch whisky.
Chivas Regal 12 year is one of the Blended Scotch Whiskies where it’s clear that the master blender skillfully blended the whiskies together for an excellent scotch. The scent is complex and the whisky has a beautiful amber color. A thin Scotch whisky, the Chivas Regal 12 year blended scotch whisky has notes of caramel, toffee, chocolate, vanilla with a smooth, sweet and great flavor. We love this scotch and will drink it again and again. Greatly recommended.
New York — Glenmorangie has won the top honor in this year’s Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards in the Distiller of the Year category, beating out an impressive list of nominees. “We are extremely honored to be recognized by Wine Enthusiast for the great yet unseen lengths that we go to in crafting our whisky,” said Brian Cox, Vice President of Glenmorangie. According to Wine Enthusiast Magazine, Glenmorangie’s nomination resulted from its impressive innovation “ranging from polished classics and elegant cask-finished whiskies to its 2011 release of the luxurious Glenmorangie Pride 1981 bottling.”
Glenmorangie pioneered the now widely used techniques of extra maturation, best illustrated in its 12 years old Extra Matured Range: Lasanta (Sherry Finish), Quinta Ruban (Port Finish) and Nectar d’Or (Sauternes Finish). After spending 10 years in American white oak bourbon casks, each expression is extra-matured in superior quality wine casks for two more years. The original smoothness of Glenmorangie is enhanced by the rich layers of flavors and wine characteristics that each cask brings.
Glenmorangie Pride 1981 is the culmination of 28 years of passion, patience and artistry. Pride 1981 is the longest extra maturation Glenmorangie has ever offered. The whisky is matured in the finest oak casks for 18 years before being aged exclusively in Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes casks for another ten years. Presented in a Baccarat crystal decanter, it is an extremely rare, limited edition of only 1,000 bottles worldwide.
The distinguished Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Award comes in addition to more than eighteen ‘Gold Best in Class’ medals from the International Wine and Spirit Competition that the Company has received over the past five years, cementing its reputation for creating an ‘Unnecessarily Well Made’ portfolio of single malt Scotch whiskies.
Glenmorangie will be showcased with other winners in the December 15th issue of Wine Enthusiast Magazine and will be honored at the Wine Star Awards black-tie gala dinner in New York City on January 30, 2012.
The Glenmorangie distillery was founded in 1843 in the Highlands of Scotland and is renowned as a pioneer in its field for uniting tradition with innovation. Glenmorangie is distilled in the tallest malt whisky stills, expertly matured in the finest oak casks, and perfected by the 16 Men of Tain. It has been Scotland’s favorite single malt for over 50 years and is famous worldwide for producing the most complex and perfectly balanced Single Malts in the world.
About The Glenmorangie Company
The Company is one of the most renowned and innovative distillers of Scotch whisky brands worldwide and is part of Moet Hennessy, the wine and spirits division of Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH). Headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, the company produces two main single malt brands – Glenmorangie Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky and Ardbeg Single Islay Malt Whisky.

Soju is one of the best selling spirits in the world and the Korean Soju Jinro is actually the top selling spirit in the world. Ichiko Seirin Sochu is Japan’s take on the furiously popular Korean spirit. Much like vodka in scent and taste, Soju and Sochu actually have about 50% of the alcohol content of vodka, meaning it has much more drinkability. Distilled from carefully selected barley and pure spring water, Ichiko Seirin Sochu is filtered through bamboo charcoal and made from the most choice barley and malt. When compared to Jinro Soju, this is not even a contest. The Ichiko Seirin Sochu is in a class of its own having much more bite, complexity, flavor and depth. We highly recommend the Ichiko Seirin Sochu.
Ichiko Seirin Sochu Tasting Notes:
With a lemon cookie scent, good bite and sweet flavor, Ichiko Seiring is lightly grainy and complex. We love it!
Made from 100% estate grown blue agave, Milagro tequila is made in the old world style, slow roasting the Agave pina’s in clay ovens. Milagro Reposado is a small batch, triple distilled tequila and the slow roasted pina’s allows for a more natural flavor. This reposado is aged for 6 months in oak barrels, 4 months longer than most reposados. This is a very solid and complex reposado.
Milagro Reposado Tequila Tasting Notes:
Scent of citrus, the taste is smooth, sweet and tangy with a thin but good and complex mouth feel. Good flavors of oak and sweet flavors of agave. Highly recommended.
