Glenmorangie Partners with the British Open!

Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch Whisky 225x300 Glenmorangie Partners with the British Open!NEW YORK — Scotland is celebrated the world over for whisky and golf, so what could be more appropriate than today’s announcement of a three year partnership that will see Glenmorangie become the Official Whisky of The Open Championship.  The pairing of Glenmorangie and The R&A organizers of The Open Championship is a natural fit, as both have huge global followings.

Glenmorangie is enjoyed in over 130 countries worldwide, and, of course, in the U.S. where it has been the fastest growing single malt whisky for the past three years. The Open Championship is golf’s most famous tournament, and is watched on television by an estimated 458 million households in 196 territories worldwide. Over 200,000 visitors flock to Britain’s finest coastal golf courses every year to enjoy the drama of The Open in person. Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, near Liverpool, will be hosting the Open Championship in 2012 (July 15-22).

Both Glenmorangie and The Open have a proud heritage dating back over 150 years. Glenmorangie was first produced in 1843 and is a leading player in premium single malts. The Open is golf’s oldest Major Championship, dating back to 1860, and offers the famous Claret Jug as its prize.

Just as Glenmorangie goes to unnecessary lengths to craft its award-winning single malt whisky – using the tallest stills in Scotland and only the finest quality oak casks – so The Open is renowned every year for its meticulous preparation of the greens, fairways and bunkers of each Championship course.

Peter Dawson, The R&A’s Chief Executive, welcomed Paul Skipworth, President and Managing Director of The Glenmorangie Company, to St Andrews, and expressed his delight at the partnership.

Paul Skipworth said: “Glenmorangie is proud to become a part of this amazing Championship, which will see our whisky showcased to as many as 200,000 visitors at each Open. Glenmorangie is delighted with our partnership with The R&A, an association of our mutually high standards. Like The Open itself, we believe in going the extra mile in the pursuit of perfection.”

Brian Cox, Vice President of Glenmorangie, U.S., agreed and added: “There’s a lot of common ground between lovers of fine golf and fine Scotch whisky, and we’re extremely excited about this opportunity to reach out and connect the patrons of these two world-class brands, both nationally and internationally.

Peter Dawson said: “We are thrilled to welcome Glenmorangie as the Official Whisky of The Open Championship. Glenmorangie is an iconic Scottish brand, which, like golf, is enjoyed the world over.”

The Jura 16 Year Single Malt Scotch: Simply one of the Best Whiskies in the World!

Jura 16 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky The Jura 16 Year Single Malt Scotch: Simply one of the Best Whiskies in the World! What Single Malt Scotch Whisky was Meant to Be…

By Matt Goldstein & Amy K. Haight

Only 180 people populate the Isle of Jura, and the Jura distillery lies on the east side of the island.  Distilling scotch on the remote island of Jura dates back to the 1600’s and the Jura distillery just celebrated their 200 year anniversary in 2010. The island of Jura is just 7 miles wide and 30 miles long with one road, one hotel and one distillery.  In Gaelic, the people of Jura are known as Diurachs and known for their hunting, shooting, fishing, sailing, lobster, and of course, single malt scotch.  The Jura 16 Year Single Malt is aged just off the beach on the Isle of Jura and gets much of its complex characteristics from the ocean air.  Matured no less than 16 years, this single malt Scotch whisky is simply one of the best in the world period.  All we can say is WOW!

The Jura 16 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky Tasting Notes:

With a scent of ocean air, oak and syrup, thw Jura has notes and flavors of oak, syrup, honey and has real complexity.  Smooth yet very complex, this is the perfect single malt scotch and comes with our highest recommendation.

Drinking Drunken Presidents: FDR, LBJ & Richard Nixon

fdr drinking a martini cocktail 300x225 Drinking Drunken Presidents: FDR, LBJ & Richard NixonGreat Partying Presidents

By Matt Goldstein

With a great tradition of drinking in the United States, our fair share of presidents also have a rich history of the party and cocktail lifestyle.  With George Washington running a very successful whiskey distillery on his plantation, Jefferson brewing his own beer, Jon Adams being a  flat our alcoholic and Ulysses S. Grant leading the troops into battle while being completely lit, our founding fathers knew how to throw down.  Some of our more modern presidents like Barak Obama loves charming political rivals with a few beers hoping that will ease tensions and get some bills passed through the senate.

FDR:

The man who ended prohibition, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was known to mix cocktails in the oval office every single night.  Every single night!  We at Whiskey Goldmine don’t even drink every night, that’s just insane.  Even during the war, FDR mixed his own drinks right at his desk making martinis and old fashions, talking and mixing drinks for others around him.  When Truman actually got the news of FDR’s passing, Harry was said to have been sipping a Bourbon when he got a the phone call; a fine tribute to his predecessor.

LBJ:

The man who is credited for passing the civil rights bill but also demonized for starting the Vietnam War, Lyndon B Johnson, was also a hell of a drinker.  The main cocktail Johnson mixed was a scotch and soda, specifically Cutty Shark.  Johnson used to drive around his ranch with the secret service mixing him drinks in the car behind him.  The routine was done so often that Johnson didn’t even have to stop the car to hand off his empty glass and then receive a new cocktail.  That’s some professional shit right there.

Richard Nixon drinking martinis Leonid Brezhnev 300x215 Drinking Drunken Presidents: FDR, LBJ & Richard NixonRichard Nixon:

The man who went down in flames over the infamous Watergate scandal, Richard Nixon was a flat out drunk.  The Nixon administration  invented cocktail parties for the press but for Nixon this wasn’t a good idea as he didn’t talk to anyone and just got hammered.  His only conversation was asking people if they wanted another drink while he was sitting at the bar.  Hey, that aint the worst thing to say to a journalist, shit, I encourage people to ask me that very question.  It’s been documented that at times Nixon couldn’t take phone calls from some foreign world leaders because he was completely intoxicated.  Well, Nixon’s drunkenness didn’t lead to any wars right?  I guess we can hope so.

Buffalo Trace Releases Rice Bourbon & Oat Bourbon

buffalo trace bourbon logo Buffalo Trace Releases Rice Bourbon & Oat BourbonLatest Two Experiments by Sazerac

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky –Those creative distillers have been up to it again at Buffalo Trace Distillery. The latest round of whiskies in the Experimental Collection are two bourbons – one made with rice and one made with oats. And like their breakfast-sounding names, both provide a hearty mouthful without being over powerful.

“For this experiment, we were curious to taste what would happen when we substituted the rye grain in our traditional recipe with other grains like rice and oats,” said Harlen Wheatley, master distiller at Buffalo Trace Distillery. “The results are very different from each other, and different than typical bourbon, but both are pleasant surprises.”  This whiskey experiment yielded very few bottles, but some will be available in select U.S. stores in late December.Details are as follows:

Rice Bourbon Whiskey – These barrels were filled on April 30, 2002, and aged on the 7th floor of Warehouse I for 9 years and 5 months.  Corn, malt and rice are the ingredients used in the recipe, resulting in a very clean aroma with the barrel notes of caramel and spice.  A crisp flavor on the tongue is noticed, without any heaviness or oiliness whatsoever. A slight dryness near the end provides a quick finish. It is a very delicate whiskey.  Oat Bourbon Whiskey – These barrels have the same fill date, aging location and aging time as the Rice Bourbon. Corn, malt and oats are the ingredients used in this recipe, resulting in a pleasantly smoky nose with a rich aroma of toasted oats that offers a nice complexity. On the palette, the smokiness intrigues as hints of dried fig and stone fruit come through, and eventually give way to an earthy finish. There are more than 1,500 experimental barrels of whiskey now aging in the warehouses of Buffalo Trace Distillery. Each of these barrels has unique characteristics that differentiate it from all others. Some examples of these experiments include unique mash bills, type of wood and barrel toasts. In order to further increase the scope, flexibility and range of the experimental program, an entire micro distillery, named The Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. “OFC” Micro Distillery, complete with cookers, fermenting tanks and a state-of-the-art micro still has been constructed within Buffalo Trace Distillery.

The Experimental Collection will be packaged in 375ml bottles. Each label will include all the pertinent information unique to that barrel of whiskey. These whiskeys will retail for approximately $46.35 each. They are 45% alcohol by volume. Each experiment is very rare and very limited

A Blue Agave Christmas: The Tequila Holiday Gift Guide

Epsolon Reposado Tequila A Blue Agave Christmas: The Tequila Holiday Gift GuideJust like vodka, gin and whiskey, tequila—no matter whether it’s sipped neat or mixed in a Margarita—has become a year-round favorite.  A bottle of it is also a thoughtful holiday present. To help you out, we asked expert Julio Bermejo, owner of San Francisco institution Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant, for his spirited gift suggestions.
Blanco:
When it comes to blanco, Bermejo likes 7 Leguas ($40), which is family-owned and crafted in the highlands of Jalisco using both traditional and modern techniques. The lowland Fortaleza Blanco ($48) is another excellent choice. “It’s the last tequila made by hand in the valley,” he says.

Reposado:
Bermejo calls the highland Espolòn Reposado ($25) “a tremendous value for the money.” It’s aged for approximately six months in American-oak barrels. If you can find it, Chinaco Reposado ($53) is also a lovely gift. It’s produced by the only tequila distillery in the state of Tamaulipas.

Añejo:
The highland El Tesoro Añejo ($60) is a perfect present. It’s made with the most old-school of methods and is aged for two to three years in former bourbon casks. El Jimador Añejo($30), from the lowlands, is a good alternative. It’s “very wood-driven and a great value,” Bermejo says.

Extra Añejo:
The oldest tequilas are awarded this prized distinction. If you’re looking for something special, give the highland Don Julio Real ($350), which is matured for as long as five years, or the lowlands’ “spicy and bold” Partida Elegante ($350), which, according to Bermejo, lives up to its name.

Glenmorangie Named Distiller of the Year Again!

Glenmorangie Single Malt Named Top UK Distiller 200x300 Glenmorangie Named Distiller of the Year Again!Over the past five years Glenmorangie has won a remarkable total of 18 ‘Gold Best in Class’ medals at the International Wines and Spirit Competition (IWSC) – the most internationally-recognized wine and spirits awards body. This is more than any other single malt Scotch whisky, making Glenmorangie the ‘best awarded’ of any single malt.

Since its foundation in 1969 the IWSC has rewarded excellence in the world of wines and spirits, and November 16 was no exception. In the presence of 500 aficionados from across the globe at London’s historic Guildhall, Glenmorangie received yet another honor —the IWSC Best Distiller award. The title is a well-deserved addition to Glenmorangie’s collection of distinguished accolades.

Dr. Bill Lumsden, Head of Distilling & Whisky Creation at Glenmorangie, said: “It’s great to receive validation from theIWSC of our ‘unnecessarily well made’ whiskies. We have the tallest stills in Scotland giving us a smoother, purer spirit; we only use our casks twice for maximum flavor – whereas other companies use theirs up to six or seven times; and we are pioneers of extra maturation. Glenmorangie was the first whisky company to practice the art of extra maturing whisky in ex-wine casks and we are still the leading experts in this today.”

Brian Cox, Vice President of Glenmorangie in the U.S., said: “We are both honored and flattered to receive the IWSC Best Distiller award — a prestigious recognition that we do not take lightly. It’s truly the distillery and the people who create Glenmorangie that sets our whisky apart from the competition. I raise a glass of our whisky not only in celebration, but as a testament to all that Glenmorangie has collectively accomplished.”

The Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or 12 Years Aged Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

glenmorangie nectar dor single malt scotch whisky 225x300 The Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or 12 Years Aged Highland Single Malt Scotch WhiskyThis Highland Malt is Perhaps a Bit Overpriced and Pedestrian

By Matt Goldstein & Amy K. Haight

After recently being named Distiller of the year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine, we tasted the Glenmorangie 18 Years aged Single Malt and we can understand the enthusiasm behind this great distillery.  On the other hand, we also tasted the Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or at Philadelphia’s Union Trust Streakhouse.  First, the Union Trust overcharged for about $22 per glass.  Maybe the bartender made a mistake considering the Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon was only $15.  Any who, not to hold that against Glenmorangie, but the Nectar D’Or seemed to under perform.  Perhaps a bit pedestrian, and perhaps a bit overpriced, the Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or was solid, but nothing special.  Non chill filtered, the Nectar D’Or is aged in French Oak which is rare for a single malt scotch.  We respect and appreciate Glenmorangie’s willingness to be different but we’re not sure if they created anything special here by branching out.  The Casks are hand selected wine barriques from Sauternes, a famous and ancient sweet wine growing region of France and the whisky is casked for a minium of 10 years.

The Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or is thin with an average scent.  Having good flavor but thin overall and thin on the finish, this is a solid single malt scotch, but nothing great when compared in its class.  The Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or won a few silver medals in 2008 and 2009.

By Chris Meehan, Amy K. Haight & Matt Goldstein

Because of the price tag, about $250, very few get a chance to taste the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Blended Scotch Whisky.  But when confronted with the opportunity, it’s an absolute must!  The Johnnie Walker Blue Label is hand crafted in single barrel batches and is a blend of 9 whiskies.  The Johnnie Walker Master Blender hand selects the premium whiskies used for the blend, and draws from the largest whisky reserves in the world, dating back 200 years.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label Tasting Notes:

The scent is a medium to solid scent of peat smoke.  The whisky is very light and smooth with flavors of grain.  Having a peat mouth feel with notes of sweet honey, this is a complex and excellent whiskey.  The mouth feel was also thick and creamy, and we consider it to be incomparable.  The Blue Label is perhaps the best mouth feel of any whisky in the world.  A flat out stud!  The Johnnie Walker Blue Label is simply one of the best whisky’s you will ever try.

johnnie walker red black green gold blue pic One of the World’s Best Whiskies: The Johnnie Walker Blue Label Blended Scotch WhiskyFrom Johnnie Walker!

Johnnie Walker Blue Label is the epitome of blending. Created to reflect the style of whiskies in the early 19th century, it’s created using some of our rarest casks from the Johnnie Walker stocks, the largest in the world.

The casks are hand-selected and set aside for their exceptional quality, character and flavor. The character of Blue Label is truly unique; it is complex, powerful, incredibly smooth and retains the Johnnie Walker signature smokiness.

King George V from Blue Label was created to celebrate the Royal Warrant given to the Walker family in 1934 to mark their exceptional quality. This blend includes Port Ellen™, a highly prized malt whose distillery no longer exists.

The John Walker is the most recent addition, created as a tribute to our founder. Hand-crafted in single barrel batches of only 330 bottles, it’s an exceptionally rare blend of 9 whiskies, including those from Glen Albyn™ and Cambus™ distilleries. It’s presented in a unique, individually numbered Baccarat crystal decanter – hand blown, polished and engraved by one of only three Master Craftsmen in the world.
