The man who ended prohibition, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was known to mix cocktails in the oval office every single night. Every single night! Even during the war, FDR mixed his own drinks right at his desk making martinis and old fashions, talking and mixing drinks for others around him. When Truman actually got the news of FDR’s passing, Harry was said to have been sipping a Bourbon when he got a the phone call; a fine tribute to his predecessor.
The man who is credited for passing the civil rights bill but also demonized for starting the Vietnam War, Lyndon B Johnson, was also a hell of a drinker. The main cocktail Johnson mixed was a scotch and soda, specifically Cutty Shark. Johnson used to drive around his ranch with the secret service mixing him drinks in the car behind him. The routine was done so often that Johnson didn’t even have to stop the car to hand off his empty glass and then receive a new cocktail. That’s some professional shit right there.
The man who went down in flames over the infamous Watergate scandal, Richard Nixon was a flat out drunk. The Nixon administration invented cocktail parties for the press but for Nixon this wasn’t a good idea as he didn’t talk to anyone and just got hammered. His only conversation was asking people if they wanted another drink while he was sitting at the bar. Hey, that aint the worst thing to say to a journalist, shit, I encourage people to ask me that very question. It’s been documented that at times Nixon couldn’t take phone calls from some foreign world leaders because he was completely intoxicated. Well, Nixon’s drunkenness didn’t lead to any wars right? I guess we can hope so.
FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky –Those creative distillers have been up to it again at Buffalo Trace Distillery. The latest round of whiskies in the Experimental Collection are two bourbons – one made with rice and one made with oats. And like their breakfast-sounding names, both provide a hearty mouthful without being over powerful.
“For this experiment, we were curious to taste what would happen when we substituted the rye grain in our traditional recipe with other grains like rice and oats,” said Harlen Wheatley, master distiller at Buffalo Trace Distillery. “The results are very different from each other, and different than typical bourbon, but both are pleasant surprises.” This whiskey experiment yielded very few bottles, but some will be available in select U.S. stores in late December.Details are as follows:
Rice Bourbon Whiskey – These barrels were filled on April 30, 2002, and aged on the 7th floor of Warehouse I for 9 years and 5 months. Corn, malt and rice are the ingredients used in the recipe, resulting in a very clean aroma with the barrel notes of caramel and spice. A crisp flavor on the tongue is noticed, without any heaviness or oiliness whatsoever. A slight dryness near the end provides a quick finish. It is a very delicate whiskey. Oat Bourbon Whiskey – These barrels have the same fill date, aging location and aging time as the Rice Bourbon. Corn, malt and oats are the ingredients used in this recipe, resulting in a pleasantly smoky nose with a rich aroma of toasted oats that offers a nice complexity. On the palette, the smokiness intrigues as hints of dried fig and stone fruit come through, and eventually give way to an earthy finish. There are more than 1,500 experimental barrels of whiskey now aging in the warehouses of Buffalo Trace Distillery. Each of these barrels has unique characteristics that differentiate it from all others. Some examples of these experiments include unique mash bills, type of wood and barrel toasts. In order to further increase the scope, flexibility and range of the experimental program, an entire micro distillery, named The Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. “OFC” Micro Distillery, complete with cookers, fermenting tanks and a state-of-the-art micro still has been constructed within Buffalo Trace Distillery.
The Experimental Collection will be packaged in 375ml bottles. Each label will include all the pertinent information unique to that barrel of whiskey. These whiskeys will retail for approximately $46.35 each. They are 45% alcohol by volume. Each experiment is very rare and very limited
Just like vodka, gin and whiskey, tequila—no matter whether it’s sipped neat or mixed in a Margarita—has become a year-round favorite. A bottle of it is also a thoughtful holiday present. To help you out, we asked expert Julio Bermejo, owner of San Francisco institution Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant, for his spirited gift suggestions. Blanco:
When it comes to blanco, Bermejo likes 7 Leguas ($40), which is family-owned and crafted in the highlands of Jalisco using both traditional and modern techniques. The lowland Fortaleza Blanco ($48) is another excellent choice. “It’s the last tequila made by hand in the valley,” he says.
Bermejo calls the highland Espolòn Reposado ($25) “a tremendous value for the money.” It’s aged for approximately six months in American-oak barrels. If you can find it, Chinaco Reposado ($53) is also a lovely gift. It’s produced by the only tequila distillery in the state of Tamaulipas.
The highland El Tesoro Añejo ($60) is a perfect present. It’s made with the most old-school of methods and is aged for two to three years in former bourbon casks. El Jimador Añejo($30), from the lowlands, is a good alternative. It’s “very wood-driven and a great value,” Bermejo says.
The oldest tequilas are awarded this prized distinction. If you’re looking for something special, give the highland Don Julio Real ($350), which is matured for as long as five years, or the lowlands’ “spicy and bold” Partida Elegante ($350), which, according to Bermejo, lives up to its name.

This Highland Malt is Perhaps a Bit Overpriced and Pedestrian

After recently being named Distiller of the year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine, we tasted the Glenmorangie 18 Years aged Single Malt and we can understand the enthusiasm behind this great distillery. On the other hand, we also tasted the Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or at Philadelphia’s Union Trust Streakhouse. First, the Union Trust overcharged for about $22 per glass. Maybe the bartender made a mistake considering the Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon was only $15. Any who, not to hold that against Glenmorangie, but the Nectar D’Or seemed to under perform. Perhaps a bit pedestrian, and perhaps a bit overpriced, the Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or was solid, but nothing special. Non chill filtered, the Nectar D’Or is aged in French Oak which is rare for a single malt scotch. We respect and appreciate Glenmorangie’s willingness to be different but we’re not sure if they created anything special here by branching out. The Casks are hand selected wine barriques from Sauternes, a famous and ancient sweet wine growing region of France and the whisky is casked for a minium of 10 years.
The Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or is thin with an average scent. Having good flavor but thin overall and thin on the finish, this is a solid single malt scotch, but nothing great when compared in its class. The Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or won a few silver medals in 2008 and 2009.
Because of the price tag, about $250, very few get a chance to taste the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Blended Scotch Whisky. But when confronted with the opportunity, it’s an absolute must! The Johnnie Walker Blue Label is hand crafted in single barrel batches and is a blend of 9 whiskies. The Johnnie Walker Master Blender hand selects the premium whiskies used for the blend, and draws from the largest whisky reserves in the world, dating back 200 years.

The scent is a medium to solid scent of peat smoke. The whisky is very light and smooth with flavors of grain. Having a peat mouth feel with notes of sweet honey, this is a complex and excellent whiskey. The mouth feel was also thick and creamy, and we consider it to be incomparable. The Blue Label is perhaps the best mouth feel of any whisky in the world. A flat out stud! The Johnnie Walker Blue Label is simply one of the best whisky’s you will ever try.
