The Siku Glacier Ice Vodka is made from pure glacier ice from the 60,000 year old Qalerallit Sermia Glacier in Greenland.  The ice from the glacier never even becomes water but actually is made straight into the vodka, a characteristic completely unique to Siku.  Five times distilled and imported from the Netherlands, Siku is a small batch grain vodka.  Meaning ice in Greenlandic, the Siku vodka makes a solid martini for experienced vodka drinkers.  With a grainy and complex taste, Siku is a very flavorful vodka.  Full bodied, full flavored, sharp and crisp but smoother as you sip, the Siku works very well with the vermouth and olives, complimenting each other.  At times, the Siku vodka can be a bit too sharp for the amateur drinker, but it’s a solid vodka for the experienced and those looking for real vodka flavor.  As always, we taste the vodka with an in and out style of martini, using the least amount of vermouth as possible.

Vodka has been made in Poland for more than 600 years and Belvedere Intense Unfiltered is an attempt to create the natural antique Polish vodka flavor.  Combining local source 100% “single estate” Dankowskie diamond rye baker’s grain with pristine artisan water from Belvedere wells, the Intense Unfiltered 80 Vodka is distilled four times.  Although we were expecting this vodka to be strong and have a big kick, it was actually smooth and flavorful.  As always, we taste vodka with the in an out martini style with 2 olives.

Having a heavy rye and grain flavor, smooth a light kick, the Belvedere Unfiltered Intense 80 compliments the olives and vermouth well.  Lightly oily, good and flavorful this vodka is smooth more than intense.  While we were hoping for more of a kick and bite from an intense vodka, this is still a beautiful beverage.  If you’re looking for something smooth but still flavorful, this could be the vodka for you.

The Porter style was originally created in the UK by blending three ales (Old Ale, Mild, Bitter).  The resulting brew is dark in color with rich, nutty flavors that highlight the roasted malts.  The Stout (originally Stout Porter) takes this even further offering darker, richer notes.  Some brewers have chosen to add chocolate or coffee to these brews resulting in delicious, full-bodied brews.

Elijah Craig recently won Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and was named winner in the Premium Bourbon category in Whisky Magazine ‘s bi-annual “Best of the Best” tasting competition.

¼ oz exclusive vodka

¼ oz tequila

¼ oz gin

¼ oz triple sec

½ oz lemon juice

Coke

Mix all ingredients other than coke. Take a tall glass filled with ice and pour the mix over ice. Top it with coke. Garnish with a wedge of lemon.

Kamikaze is a tasty cocktail that can mixed in no time and is a sure crowd pleaser. You can sweeten the lime juice if you desire.

1 oz exclusiv vodka

1 oz triple sec

1 oz lime juice

Shake it all up over ice. Strain and pour into a chilled cocktail glass garnished with a lime wedge.

The Royal Canadian Small Batch Canadian Whiskey is one of five Canadian Whiskeys made by the Sazerac Company.  Made in very small batches under the eye of the Master Blender, each barrel is hand bottled and described as “Sweet and smoky like a Memphis BBQ. The initial sip is velvety smooth with huge flavors.  The Royal Canadian Small Batch tasting notes:  The whiskey is thin, grainy, slightly tart and smooth. A mellow mouth feel and malty grainy long aftertaste with a light hint of malt.  This is a solid Canadian whiskey.

A New Jack Daniels Bottle

Mr. Jack put his whiskey in a square bottle so it would stand out, and we want to make sure that it continues to do so. For that reason, we’ve squared the bottle a bit and given the label a cleaner look.  Please be assured that while the bottle has been updated a bit to reflect the quality of the Tennessee Whiskey within, the whiskey itself remains unchanged. We still craft each and every bottle of Jack Daniel’s here in Lynchburg using the recipe Mr. Jack came up with back in 1866. We use water from the Jack Daniel’s Cave Spring, and mellow our whiskey drop by drop through 10 feet of hard sugar maple charcoal to give it the distinctive smooth character you’ve come to love, and we still mature our whiskey to taste in new, charred, white oak barrels.

We believe that by better reflecting the quality and craftsmanship of the whiskey within, our bottle honors Mr. Jack’s mandate that “Every day we make it we’ll make it the best we can.” And, we think Mr. Jack would be proud to see the way we’ve continued to revere the whiskey he created with such care.

Grilled Skirt Steak Tacos with salsa and Bohemia Lager

Perhaps the best Mexican beer, Bohemia is a smooth, easy drinking style with a lot of flavor.  Surprisingly crisp and clean with an unexpected subtle yet distinct hoppiness, it could compare with a solid American IPA and tasted a lot like Flying Fish.  Check out this steak taco recipe by Bohemia chef Rick Bayless. 

Serves 4

·         1 jar (16 ounces) Frontera Chipotle Salsa or Frontera Roasted Tomato Salsa

·         ½ cup Bohemia beer

·         3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

·         3 tablespoons fresh lime juice

·         ¼ teaspoon ground cumin

·         Salt

·         2 medium white onions, sliced into ½-inch rounds

·         Vegetable oil

·         Chopped fresh cilantro, lime wedges

·         12 fresh, warm tortillas

1.       Cut steak into 4- or 5-inch portions. Mix 1/2 cup of the salsa, the beer, garlic, lime juice, cumin and ½ teaspoon salt in a large zippered bag. Add the steak. Close the bag tightly and turn gently to coat the steak. Refrigerate 1 hour or up to 8 hours.

2.       Heat a gas grill to medium-high or light a charcoal fire. Brush or spray the onion slices with vegetable oil. Grill onions over a cooler section of the grill, turning carefully until softened and browned, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a serving dish.

3.        Remove the steak from the marinade (discard the marinade). Oil the steak well on both sides, and lay it over the hottest part of the grill.  Grill, turning once, until richly browned and done to your liking, about 1 ½ to 2 minutes per side for medium-rare.
