Vodka’s To Avoid: New Amsterdam Vodka & Smirnoff Whipped Cream Flavored Vodka

New Amsterdam Vodka Bottle 218x300 Vodka’s To Avoid: New Amsterdam Vodka & Smirnoff Whipped Cream Flavored VodkaBelow Average Vodkas for their Price Range

By Matt Goldstein & Amy K. Haight

These aren’t the most expensive vodkas but its all relative, no?  The New Amsterdam Vodka for about $14 is just way below average, even for the low price.  There are much better vodka’s in this price range such as Tangueray Sterling Vodka, 42 Below Vodka, Koenig Idaho Potato Vodka, Pinnacle Vodka, Rokk Vodka, and Svedka Vodka to name a few.  New Amsterdam is harsh, flavorless and just plain bad.  Not every vodka has to be smooth but New Amsterdam Vodka just doesn’t make the cut.  Distilled five times, New Amsterdam Vodka is “so smooth you can drink it straight” according to the company.  We drank New Amsterdam straight just like we do all our vodkas, but we wouldn’t even waste our money on this vodka for a mixer.  There are better vodkas for this price.  New Amsterdam Vodka is a mixer only vodka.

The new flavored vodka craze is taking over the shelves in your local liquor store in case you haven’t noticed.  About 10 different vodkas have about 10 different flavors available from Whipped Cream to Birthday cake to grape, lemon, raspberry and a million different kind of flavor combinations that can be imagined.  It’s a bit annoying because we’d prefer straight vodka or a straight martini but hey, the people want what they want.  And greedy evil liquor corporations have an obligation to make money of the peoples flavored vodka needs.  We recently tried the Whipped Cream Flavored vodka from Smirnoff and it wasn’t too bad, but it just didn’t taste like whipped cream.  The Smirnoff Whipped Cream tasted more like vanilla actually.  We made some great cocktails though, such as the Orange Creamsicle, just mix 1 part vodka with 3.5 parts orange soda.  Also, we made a vanilla cola cocktail and the mix is the same, 1 part vodka and 3.5 parts cola.  Smirnoff Whipped Cream isn’t bad, just don’t expect a whipped cream flavor.

Drank NA peach last night for the first time. I generally know when to stop drinking and I never get sick after, but the only problem I see with this is not knowing when enough is enough. I just kept drinking it until I was sick. I’m still sick today. I’ll probably never drink it again, but not because it was bad. It was a little too good in my opinion. Lol.

I tried New Amsterdamn (Since Sobieski went to crap and now tastes like something in Kentucky) I have been looking for a sip-able vodka at a decent price. This AINT IT. Too bitter to sip. To harsh for shots. Has an off smell. Gives you heartburn. There are plenty of bottom shelf vodkas that are on a shelf above New Amsterdam. I just wish Sobieski was still drinkable, it was a Great Polish Vodka. And I cant afford Wyborowa or Belvedere (except for Christmas Eve).

Amsterdam is terrible. The bottom of the barrel when it comes to Vodka. If your looking for a cheap drunk, its your drink but my personal opinion is its too rough. When drinking Vodka you want a smooth one. Its more enjoyable.

This vodka is the worst! The last time I drank this I was sicker than I have ever been, had to call someone to come and get me. The last two times my friend drank this she got sick also. I wouldn’t drink this ever again!

New Amsterdam isn’t the best I’ve ever had but I’d defiantly score it above pinnacle, Smirnoff , and Absolut. It is smooth and would work well as a mixer vodka. As far as a connisur is concerned, it falls flat big time, doesn’t have much body or taste…not really suggested for on the rocks enjoyment. But as a mixer I’d think it is an excellent choice. Better than Smirnoff for sure. If your curious I prefer Russian Standard’s family of brands or Stoli.

You sir are incorrect, coming from a guy smarter than Einstein, I can tell you that NAmsterdam vodka is garbage compared to Smirnoff vodka. I gave it a go and experienced a rotgut feeling I never feel after a night of Smirnoff,. Not to mention taste. I am a knowledge God, my nipples get hard and then I just know the right answer.

New Amsterdam is Great. I had bought a small sample bottle for 2 dollar. mixed it with cranberry and it was awesome! and i was on an empty stomach. i swer i never felt so happy from drinking before. they must lace the vodka with happy pills. cuz i was laughing and listening to music! Like a dam ANTI-Depressant… then i switched to svedka grape with cranberry and thats when my happy went down the drain, yeah i was nice for the rest of the night but the svedka made me feel sluggish! O.o

I agree. New Amsterdam has a kick to it that can’t be found in other liquor. I can drink half a bottle of any other brand and feel OK, but not drunk. One third of a bottle of New Amsterdam and I feel downright drunk, but in a good way. Seems to be more bang for your buck in New Amsterdam vodka. It did not give me any hangover, but that’s not saying much because I rarely get hangovers, and even then only from the crappiest toxin filled liquors like Jim Beam.

I respect your opinion on this vodka, even though mine is different I fall back on what my granddad told me as a kid “Opinions are like butt holes, Everyone has one” his version was slightly dirtier but I don’t know forum rules here. Anyway Personally I really only drank Absolute and cranberry juice when it came to vodka and the few cheap ones I had growing up were harsh and gave horrible headaches. I seem to always notice a cleaning product type taste in vodkas which I do not like. I am not saying its bleach but sorta like licking a windexed window. Anyway I recently tried some grey goose straight and was floored at the taste and smoothness. I was using the bottle to make drinks for guests but finished it myself after seeing how good it was. Now I wanna try a few vodkas out so I bought a bottle of New Amsterdam, Absolute, and grey goose. Only tried the NA the last 2 nights and it is quite smooth and almost sweet with no burn. Not sure if it gives headaches yet since I have only had a few glasses each night but overall I am impressed. I will have to try some of the others you mentioned, mainly the Tangueray one. Anyway thanks for the review. I might try the Whipped cream one for mixers for quests but I do not care much for artificially flavored alcohol myself.

New Amsterdam vodka just sold 1 million cases in its first year to market. Unfortunatly no other spirit in the world can make that statement. I think your opinion is just that, an opinion. The world has spoken and New Amsterdam Vodka is amazing in quality and price. Pinnacle and Svedka better vodkas? Get outta here!

Not sure where the negative crowd is coming from. I love sipping vodka over ice and New Amsterdam stands up to Kettle One and Dripping Springs for half the price. If you are wrestling with a budget this is the vodka for you.

I would’ve respected this more if the comparison wasn’t to better Pinnacle of Svedka. I am a taste tester and know that the better quality vodkas should be more ordorless and hints of taste, but with a clean finish. New Amsterdam impressed me like my other favorite affordable, Zyr. This has me vexed as I don’t think vodka should be something these two should be reviewing.

    [Reply]

    Matt Goldstein Reply:

Matthew, I respectfully disagree. I am a big fan of Zyr but New Amsterdam is flat out terrible. I would try anything again and will do so with New Amsterdam, maybe it will be different next time but who knows…

    You’re a taste tester? K.

    [Reply]

    Matthew Bacon Reply:

Again, what I find funny is the comparison to Svdka and Pinnacle which are bottom line vodkas(even though marketers try to sell Svedka as a top shelf). Too many impurities. I suggest try tasting for quality, not like or dislike. There are many things we can taste and judge, but not necessarily mean that it is of lesser quality if we hate it.

    Matt G. Reply:

Svedka might be inexpensive but it’s still solid for the price, as opposed to New Amsterdam. “Svedka has received several awards from spirit ratings organizations, including a rating of 93 points from Wine Enthusiast in 1999 and 2004, and a Silver Medal in the International Wine and Spirit Competition. Proof66’s aggregate score for Svedka’s unflavored vodka places it in the Top 90th percentile among rated vodkas.”

  • …. Dont know why the judges are being so harsh on this vodka.. At 6 $ for this 375 ML bottle I got its very good. What they cant make is gin… NEVER BUY THIS GIN! it taste like gin extract forreal. But they sure can make vodka, I like it! oh yea, im drinking new amsterdam vodka peach, very nice with some ice cubes.

My girlfriend bought a bottle of New Amsterdam gin last week just to try something different that wasn’t overly expensive. (I think she liked the shape of the bottle.) WOW! Talk about love at first taste. Without a doubt, this really is the smoothest gin we’ve ever tasted, and we already have Tanqueray, Booths, Bombay, and others in the liquor cabinet; and of course, have had many others. It’s the first gin we’ve enjoyed straight – just like their ad says.

Sorry for the gin intro; but based solely on the above, we picked up a bottle of New Amsterdam vodka yesterday. The same praise is repeated, and we have Fris, Stolichnaya, Smirnoff, Finlandia, Hanger One, and others. No, the taste and aroma aren’t very pronounced; in fact, they’re nearly lacking entirely. And that’s exactly what we want in a vodka. This is the first time I’ve written a spirits testimonial, and am glad we found some new favorites.

WGM, I see you wrote that you’ll have to give it another try, wondering if you’ve done that.
I drink a lot of vodka straight (cold shots), my preference is Russian Standard, but to keep vodka on hand for shots that can get pricey. I’ve tried most of the mid price brands. Svedka is ok if its all you have, pinnacle, not a fan at all, I was on a Fris kick for a little bit and bouncing around prior to that. Since I’ve had New Amsterdam I’ve stayed. I only drink from the freezer and most are tolerable when ice cold but New Amsterdam is definitely the best there is in this price range.

    WGM Reply:

I have not tried it yet but I will. Russian Standard is a stud, very smooth for it’s price.

I think the best vodka in the price range is Tanquerray Sterling. Flat out stud.

I agree with WGM this was a horrible drink to use for mixing. And this cheap drink left us with hang overs and we only had two drinks could bare much the taste was aweful.

    [Reply]

    Matt Goldstein Reply:

Agreed, they are pretty bad but hangovers are actually from dehydration, not the contents of the drink.

Wow, harsh statement. I work for a distributor and taste many vodkas, and I absolutely love New Amsterdam Vodka, especially for the price. I think there’s almost a sweetness to it. I would recommend you try it again :)

I respect your opposing opinion, but there’s something special about this vodka. The smell is not enticing, yet it’s so mellow in a mixed drink. This fact, however, is not what sticks in my mind. I get the most unique buzz off of this vodka. At first, I was mixing it with something caffeinated and assumed the happy, energetic feeling was from the caffeine (in spite of the fact that I’m seemingly numb to caffeine being an avid coffee drinker). Inevitably, I switched to a mixer with no caffeine and still had the same high energy buzz, which I’ve never gotten with any other alcohol. Maybe they lace it with happy pills?

New Amsterdam is the best mixing Vodka on the market. WGM, try it again. My friends and I will not drink any other Vodka. Try their Gin as well, Smoothest bang for the buck Gin out there!

    WGM Reply:

I will definitely try it again but there are better vodkas for less money. How can New Amsterdam be the best mixer?

    [Reply]

  • Half Zip

New amsterdam isnt anything jaw droppin but its a great bottle to split between 3 people in some mixed drinks gets you a clean drunk with lots of energy, i agree the taste isnt the best but i dont sit around trying vodkas to see what one tastes better or what one has more body, honestly i dont care aslong as its drinkable and gets you a good drunk, if your worried about taste go drink beer or champagne

    [Reply]

    WGM Reply:

If you’re going to spend the money, why not get the better vodka? I mean, you don’t care about taste but you care enough to search the internet about it, defending it. Doesn’t make much sense.
